Which device do I setup first?

HDTV Mitsubishi DLP wd-62725
HD cable box/dvr (Scientific Atlanta)
NEW Onkyo TX-SR705 reciever
NEW HD DVD Toshiba A3

The reciever & HD DVD are both new, plus I ditched all my old cables & have gone with HDMI. All cables & wires are connected for 3 devices, HDTV & 5 speaker surround sound. I'm all powered up with no place to go.

Which device do I setup first?

Tried to setup the TV (Mitsubishi wd-62725) but there is no device choice called HDMI. There is an HDMI input on the back, that's where the cable is now plugged in. But, nothing on the device menu screen or in the manual for setup using HDMI! The reciever wants to use a setup guide on the TV screen. Can't because all I have on the TV is snow. Maybe it can't see the cable box because the reciever isn't sending it's signal yet. But, how do I set up the reciever when it wants to use the TV screen to do it?

I only have 3 devices for my TV to recognize, plus speakers, how hard can this be? The hardware setup is done. It's the "Setup" of one device with the other I need help with.

Cable box & HD DVD are hooked up to Reciever via HDMI cables. 1 HDMI cable then runs to the HDTV. It seemed so simple, but alas...no.

To top it off, I'm hosting a New Years Eve Party tomorrow. I'd really like it to be running.

Got any ideas?

So you have both the cable box and A3 connected to the receiver to the hdmi in and then another hdmi cable going from the receiver to the TV on the hdmi out?

Do you get picture from the A3? If you do and not the cable box you might be having an hdcp error between the receiver and cable box. What model is your cable box? (8300HDC or 8300HD?)

It looks like the TV needs to be set up first, which doesn’t seem straightforward reading through the downloaded manual. Somewhere in the NetCommand setup (chapter 3) you should be able to assign the HDMI connection to a device. You may have to add your receiver and then edit the connection. Hope this helps.

Gus6464 & AVRat,

Thank you both for your replies. Had the New Years Eve Party (it was great) & have been sick for days since, thus my silence.

But, I am finally now hooked up! AVRat was right when said it wasn't straightforward. I'll admit I'm a novice, but there was no device connection labeled for HDMI. I couldn't tell what was 'active' with a device hooked up to it & what wasn't. So, I turned off the 'blue screen' on the tv for all device connections that weren't 'actively' hooked to a device. Once they were all black, I could scroll through & guess what? I hit a blue screen! "MONLINK" was active. (Looking closer on the back panel TV schematic it does read M-LINK below the HDMI input.) As usual with this sort of thing, it's human error that caused the problem.

Thanks again guys!

Did the system ROCK??? :D

Your Thoughts?
Wouldn't you know it, I couldn't get it going before the party.:( Which was dissapointing because I wanted to show my new DVD of me at California Speedway riding with Professional Motorcycle Racer Chris Ulrich on the back of his AMA Superbike!

New Year's Day started late & slow. Once the overnighters left, I worked on it a little here & there. I was soon sick & brain cells were my body's last priority.

System wasn't up & running until Wednesday night when that active blue screen finally showed up. But then, the world changed....when I tuned into the HD widescreen HBO broadcast of "Underworld: Evolutions". (read: Clouds part, heaven opens, doves descend, rays of light, yada yada...) Hubby dislikes vampire movies...but, he sat through the whole thing giggling like a schoolgirl! He even said, "I don't really want to watch this movie, but the sound has completely drawn me into it! I'm actually enjoying it now." During the shooting scenes, & there are a lot of them, I thought the neighbors in the house next door would be reporting gunshots to the police any moment! Sooooo loud, sooooo realistic! My hat is off to Dr. Hsu too. We joked about how our friends would soon be asking, "How did you get these cracks in your walls?", "That's our subwoofer," we'd reply:D

I had high expectations, but this far surpassed them. And, for those of you who know that my original need was clarity of dialogue for hubby, well, he is exstatic! He has thanked me several times & reminded me that he hasn't asked, "What did they say?" even once! Each week on Thursday night we visit with our regular group of friends at one of our homes. Last night Hubby didn't want to go. He said, "I just want to be with my Home Theater tonight." So, we stayed home & rented Spiderman 3 in HD On Demand from our cable company. He's hooked!

I do have a problem though. I am at MAX volume on my reciever. That can't be right! There are some TV shows & even HD DVD's that I have sampled which are not loud enough even at MAX. I have to figure out how to change this.

I'll post pics of my setup tomorrow. Stay tuned!;)

That was one of the best posts I have ever read about a new members thoughts of the system that was recommended to them.

There is a "Members System" section at the bottom of the forum

There may be a problem or it may be that you are not used to the dynamics of the system, i.e. the quiet bits are quiet and the loud bits are loud. You describe gunshots as "so loud, so realistic", seemingly as it should be and your husband is able to hear the dialog just fine. Maybe you could try using the dynamic reduction feature on the receiver, like a night mode, etc. It generally levels out the volume level raising the quiet parts and lowering the loud parts. There may indeed be a problem somewhere else in the system, but the night mode is free to try.

There may also be a volume limit setting in the setup menu that you can adjust.
