I have a 6ch wav that plays ok in foobar, but I can't seem to compress it into a flac file. I get errors from foobar flac converter and I have tried flac command line. Can any one help and maybe give me example syntax? (The file is 96khz 24bit)

I have a feeling that you may be overloading your processor, that is one heck of a lot of data to handle, you don't state what your computer is. It would take a very well founded audio workstation to accomplish your task. If you are using Vista this may also be a problem, because of all the processing power taken to make sure you are not a pirate. Vista is not recommended for audio processing, for one thing when it sees an ASIO driver it disconnects it, assuming you are a pirate.

(I do have a very powerful computer). It seems to have problems recognizing the type of file in the flac encoder. I am sure I need to "help it" with some command line switches. I noticed that opening the file in Goldwave it also did not recognize the type of file and asked for help. It never got ot right, but it did open it :) The file plays fine in foobar and WMP.

You are not the only one with this problem. The solution is there. If I was not such an idiot I would have given you the right advice first. Convert to Wav. files before encoding to Flac.

I did not find anything with that link. Is it the correct one?

I do not know your foobar or any other of the programs you mention, except FLAC.

I had a lot of resources putting my rig together.

I have as son that is a senior engineer for Seagate and another who programs instant voting, for TV programs and large conventions. I also paid for some help from a couple of professional engineers who made sure the rig would be correct for my applications. I could not be happier with it.

I built the audio workstation. The software is Steinberg Wave.Lab6. The DAC is an RME Fireface 800.

I have confirmed on my rig that FLAC will encode large Wav. files.

So the important thing is that you need to convert whatever you are working on to standard Wav. or Wav. files. They can then be encoded to FLAC. If it does not happen, then either your software is somehow corrupted or your computer is not powerful enough. If you have Vista this may also be a problem. I have been warned by individuals I trust, to never use Vista to handle audio files, so I won't. Steinberg say they will never write for Vista.

Perhaps I was not clear about the problem. I convert wavs much larger than this one with no problems. This is not about the size of the file. FLAC does not "understand" the file. It never starts the encode process. The error message is

"WAVE has >2 channels but is not WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE; cannot assign channels"

I have seen others post this problem, but I have yet to see a solution. I guess I could separate into 6 wavs and then mux them and then apply flac compression, but there has to be a better way.

Now I understand your problem! FLAC supports one to eight channels. However if more than two channels are to be encoded, then the channels must be encoded separately, like you suggest or multiplexed together in an OGG or Matroska container or some other suitable vehicle.
