No Sound on Denon 2802

Hi All - I was hoping somone out there could help. I have a Denon 2802 and tonight while changing the channels on my sat receiver my sound went out. It has done this a few times before where I notice the "digital" icon on the receiver will start to flash, but then the sound usually comes back within a few minutes. However, tonight, the sound never came back on (even though the "digital" signal is no longer flashing) and I have tried to reset using the instructions in the manual. All other functions seem to work properly with regards to the display, but no sound.

The receiver did seem to be quite warm when I first started to check it out, so I tried to let it cool down for a while, but that doesn't seem to do anything. Is this thing done for?!?

Try unplugging the reciever and your satellite box for 10 mins or so and then plugging them back in. Also, Dont jump to conclusions thinking its the reciever. From what you have said so far the satellite box is just as much as a culprit.

I'll try unplugging them. I thought it might be the sat box, so I hooked it directly into my tv and it seems to work fine.

....today the sound just popped back on while we were watching tv (the receiver was on), then went out again. Does this sound like an overheating problem? The digital icon on the front of the display also started to flash again, then the sound went back out.

Did you wire it to the TV the same way that you wire it to the Denon? Also, does the radio work after the satellite stops? Do you have any other components, like a DVD, hooked up; do they work?

My digital cable has sound that goes out quite often on our theater setup where I am using coaxial digital. I dont have the same problems using the same cable box with analog in my stereo setup. But when the sound goes out almost always the picture gets pixelated as well. I really doubt its your reciever.

Unplugging it didn't work and I have tried hooking it up every way I can think of (coax, rca, digital, analog)to get sound, but haven't had any luck. I have the same problem when I switch to stereo, or DVD as well.

I did a little more research and it appears as though this is a problem many other peopl have had. I have a factory authorized service center fairly close to me, so I think I may take it to them....unless someone out there can give me another solution.

So, you're saying that the Denon doesn't put out sound from any source, either digital or analog? How about FM?

If you have no sound from any source, it sounds like a blown amp or some other integral part. I think you'll need to bring it in for service. Is it still under warranty? If not, I would first try to get the cost of repairs, and consider an upgrade if it's more than $100-$200...there are a lot of b stock 2802's out there for some reason(s).

That's surprising.

I don't think they have been made for about four or five years. I got mine as a leftover NIB in 2003 when the 2803's hit the market.

If it's broken, he's better off simply replacing it.

One last thought: Since you say you had it unplugged, did you try going through the setup procedure again? Mine didn't make a sound until I did that.

Dakmart's got a bunch of them. Probably the last barrage of the fixer-uppers. Yeah, I probably wouldn't exceed $100 in repairs, knowing you can get a brand new Onkyo for a song.

I never heard of dakmart....I just saw an onkyo sr500 on there for $157 that seems as though it would be the same as what I have. Do you have any experience buying with these guys?

I'm starting to think that getting mine fixed is pointless.

I wouldn't...mainly because I don't like b stock. You can get a brand new 805 For about $650 if you shop. That is a stellar receiver for the money. Otherwise, take a step down and save a couple of hundred.

I went back through the setup and the digital signal is flashing again...

...edit: I just realized that if I go through test tone that the digital light starts flashing. if I turn the receiver off then the light stops, but then starts again if I run the test tone again.

Do you mean you have this problem when you try to play your DVD movies from a DVD player, the digital audio is just not functioning?
Do you have analog audio connected from the cable box or can try it and see if that works at least?
No digital audio on any TV channel?
Any input to the receiver? Then the receiver has issues:eek:

Hello !! I have the same problem than you... i was watching a movie and suddenly no more sound... DIGITAL is flashing too... my girlfriend may have pressed something on the remote by mistake but i'm not sure...
Everything seems correct... but i don't get any sound on test tone nor on tuner
Did you solve your problem ? do you know what went wrong ?
Thanks

No, no sound at all from any source/signal.
Make sure you speaker wiring is in good order, with no shorts or whiskers. If you have a short in your speaker wiring, such as a strand of speaker wire touching your receiver case, that will cause overheating and thermal cycling, and can do permanent damage.

I still don't have any sound coming out on any mode/source :(
I did the procedure to reset the CPU but it didn't change anything.
The DIGITAL logo often flashes. i don't know what happened...
Do you think something fried in my receiver ?
I tried to look for a way to contact Denon support service but looks like they don't have one, at least not in France...
Does anyone have an idea about the origin of my problem ?

It sounds as if there is something wrong in the control section, so the signals are now getting routed to the appropriate amps. But honestly it could be anything. With something that profound you won't know until is on the test bench.

How old is the unit and is there any warranty left? If there is it is time to use it. If not it may be bad news, as repair may cost close or more than its value. Receivers have never been easy to work on, and I would imagine the new ones are a nightmare.
