I'm from just north of Boston, I'm not saying I'll be around, but what do you have?

How about This Old House crew! :D Is there a Tweeter in the area? Check yellow pages under Audio/video, Home Theater, Home Automation, etc.

What sort of help are you looking for?

I guess I missunderstood the title of this thread.

I am simply going to need help setting up everything once I buy it all. I thought perhaps some capable soul from this site might want to make a couple of bucks rather than me spending too much at a Box store.

You'll have to forgive seth. He's fresh out of retirement, so not too quick on the uptake. :p

I would keep looking though. If your setup does not include a projector, installation ought to be rather simple for most members here.

Have you made a decision on all your equipment yet? How is your room progressing? Thoroughly reading through the manuals and asking ?? around here should help you get through it. I think markw is in the Boston area.

I'm making some good progress. Earlier this week the room was essentially gutted. Now it re-framed complete with a control room, screen area with a stage and a double riser for the true stadium seating effect. The back riser is 15" off the floor. It is sheetrocked and insulated. I've got my projector and screen almost purchased (looks like either the epson 1080p or the new panny and either a Da-Lite Screen or a Carada.....Couldn't seem to shell out $2k for a stewart). I have all the other decorative stuff lined up. The only thing I am stumped on is the audio. I have a wicked case of analysis paralysis. I'm about to ready to pay one of you guys $100 just to tell me what to buy. But I must say, I think I had a bit of a break through. I plan on putting 2 decorative colums along side the stage/screen. Given the close proximity of the control room to the stage it seems like the most aesthetically pleasing solution is to have the speakers inside the columns. Would that disrupt the sound quality? So I guess I am now looking for slender speakers that would fit the bill. I've decided that I don't want to spend any more than $3-4K on a system. Anyone have any reccommendations????

Tone Deaf,

I emailed someone in Boston, who may or may not respond to your request! He is an audio nut on the side with Paradigm and SVS gear, but I believe his day job is in the sciences at Harvard. We've had a lot of on-line correspondence via email and at another forum.

We will see, its been a little while since I've heard from him. Good Luck!

just thought of someone else too in Boston. He's a college kid who is extremely bright and knowledgable. He tunes pipe organs for money, has perfect pitch, lives among Berklee music students, and owns B&W and Rotel gear. I suspect that both of these guys wouldn't mind the extra cash. I'll PM this other fellow later today when time permits...

He's not really an HT guy, but knows a TON about stereo reproduction. Maybe the saying that "if its good for music, its good for HT" can apply here as well? :D

Buddy, That's awesome. Thanks.

Hey, my brother-in-law was just over and had an interesting idea once I explained that I had no idea of what to buy. He's a music kinda dude, sings in a band and all. He said the acoustics in the room already seem really good and it might be worth it to have an acoustical engineer out to consult with me. According to him, this engineer dude might suggest that I only need a system with 200 horse power (for lack of a better term) than paying up for 400 horses for not much incremental benefit given the constraints of the room. Does that make sense to anyone?

As long as the speakers you choose are 8 ohm nominal with decent sensitivity (89+), a decently powered receiver will suffice in your smallish room. Think Onkyo 705/805, Denon 2308/2808.

Are you still going with columns along the sidewalls as well? Will this be a 5/7.1 system? Are the aesthetics of the sub important?

I don't know what ohm or sensitivity is but will look into it.

I've been told to go wioth 5.1 as there isn't much going on in 7.1 land right now and I can always up it later. True?

I am hoping to put the left and rights in columns and the center speaker on the stage in front of the screen. I was going to put the sub off to the side and no am not too worried about what it looks like.

fellow #1 I still haven't heard from. I emailed his work email, which is of Harvard, and maybe he's on some break (he's not a student though). I have his other email somewhere, but Id have to dig thru too many for the moment.

fellow #2 replied, and this is what he says"

"Unfortunately, it seems his setup is going to involve some constraints that are beyond my league. When integrating speakers within pillars, I cannot say what the effects would be. I think he could get some really great ideas by crossposting in this forum:

link

The regulars in the above link are very enthusiastic and he might find enough information by lurking in that forum for a little bit.

I've only had experience with "dealing with" rooms that are already completed and optimizing it from there. He has risers in the planning/building stages and pillars and other things that are more commonplace in the dedicated theater design forum.

He mentioned that he is unsure of speakers, unfortunately that too requires him to put personal time into it. (and also depends on how he will implement the speakers (in-wall vs. within the room). His fun is just beginning..."

sorry, I couldn't help you more so far, but maybe its a little start for you! Its a good link for sure.

I still believe in-walls will work best for your column application as I mentioned here: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37854&page=3 You could design back-boxes into the columns for the in-wall application. I’m a proponent for 7.1 systems, but you may have trouble installing rear-channel in-walls (which I’d also recommend because of the close proximities) unless you prewired for them before the drywall went up. I’d grab an HSU VTF3-HO (a Mk3 will also work well in your room) sub while they still have the 10% discount.

You know, I just remembered and though of this. You should contact The Boston Audio Society, a great audio club with a huge professional membership. While they may not be of help at this instant, they are a great resource for audio reality issues, etc.:D
