Hi,
First, thank you very much to anyone who replies (and reads all of this). Second, any advice I can get is greatly appreciated.

I am beginning to put together a 5.1 set up and I am looking for opinions & advice to help me make good investments. I have been reading everything I can get my eyes on and listening when I can. Here is my basic info:

75%tv (sports), 20% movies, 5% music
The room is 14' x 20' x 8' with two large openings. One to the back and the other to the right. It's a terrible room but it's all I got...
I am looking to buy for my next house which WILL have a better HT room... :D

I have a Sony KDS 50 A2000 w/ Charter HD cable and a Denon 557 DVD player

Here's what I am looking at:

Onkyo 605 or 705 (705 overkill for what I need??)
Hsu VTF-1
Definitive Technology ProCenter 2000
Def Tech ProMonitor 1000 for L&R
Def Tech ProMonitor 800 for surrounds
or
Paradigm Cinema 330's for LRC
Paradigm ADP's or Cinema 90's for surrounds

All of these stretch my budget so I am limited as to what I can do.

Again..Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to Audioholics.

And what budget might that be that you are working with for speakers and sub?

I'll give you my $.02 worth.

If on-wall or narrow shelf space is an issue, the Cinema Series is a fine choice. I have a Cinema 220/110 setup in a bedroom. That looks to be a pretty large room for the Cinema, but I haven't actually heard the Cinema in a large room so it's just speculation. You might want to try them and see how they work in your room before you commit.

SVS and HSU are both fine choices for subs.

Mazer,
I hadn't read about these before but I will now. They seem like great speakers that fit my budget. Thanks.

Did you suggest the PB-12 rather than the 10 because of the size of the room?

With my budget...$.02 is all I can afford..:D

The sats will have to be on-wall and the L&R need to be floor standing. I heard the Cinemas and liked them but didn't love them. The sales rep didn't pick a good sound track to test with. They seemed very bright. The Def Techs seemed to be warmer, but I was listening to them on a wide open show room floor so it was tough to tell with the surrounding noise.

Any suggestions with regard to the reciever? I have been reading a lot on the Onkyo's...605 & 705

Hi,
Here's what I am looking at:

Onkyo 705 (705 overkill for what I need??)
Overkill!?! NO SUCH THING!!

My living room is about the same dimensions, and everything is new.

I went with the Onkyo 705 because of the sheer bang for the buck =
THX Certified
Allot of power
All the different listening modes / options
The Auto Calibration feature for the speakers
And my Wife and Boys can figure out how to turn it on
($650 Crutchfield)

Also like Steve mentioned, I went with the SVS 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers with PB12-NSD sub. With a bracket, stands, and shipping $1400

As these guys will tell you.... my Wife hated all this stuff big time when I first brought it home. It sounds awesome, and my wife is coming around now. We really enjoy movies and music like we haven't done in years.

Last night I turned on "Poseidon", my wife and two both couldn't care less "Saw that movie... it sucked.. worst..." Let me tell you something; it sounded so awesome they all came down to the living room to watch. We rewound the "Rouge Wave" scene two or three times. That 12” sub freaking kicked butt as that ship was getting clobbered.

Okay, I get excited = get the 705, for the money it’s hard to beat.
