Although that does suck it shows you that we live in the same world. I caught a 2' Baracuda once in Florida and was told not to eat it due to mercury. It was delicious. :)

Not mercury, far worse: ciguatera poison, a neuro toxin that can leave you paralyzed, blind, in a coma and kill you. The culprit are reef fish that feed on certain corals that contain the micro-algae. Barracuda, grouper, parrot-fish, moray eel and amberjack which are top tier predators feed on the smaller algae eaters which in turn infect the predators. Nasty stuff, a person can take up to 20 years to recover depending on severity of infection. Stay away from cudas, old myths say that cats won't eat ciguatera laden fish: not true, ants will not congregate on ciguatera laden fish: not true, the only way is to have it tested in a lab. The only way to avoid it altogether is not to eat reef fish.

Dolphin and Snook are safe, aren't they? I almost sh!t thinking you were going to say it can take 20 years to show up. WTF am I suppose to eat then? I guess I'll have to convice my girl to cook more often. She's Italian and until I moved up here I never really had a good meat sauce. Her's is great and her sister gets the best meatball prize. The tomato is safe, right?

Alright, that's it. Got paintin' to do.:)

Grouper?

Dang, I love grouper. Fresh grouper is just about all I eat when we go to Nassau. That and conch.

Dolphin, Tuna, Salmon, wahoo, any fish not feeding from the reef is safe. The last time I was in Bimini, I met a surgeon whose friend (another doctor) along with his wife were stricken with ciguatera after eating a grouper, the Coast Guard had to send a chopper to pick up the man and his wife, they made a soup with the head and backbone, that's where(along with the viscera and roe) ciguatera poison concentrates, they basically drank concentrated ciguatera, yikes. Google ciguatera, damn scary. I've cut back on reef fish tremendously. The only snapper that I eat are deep water snappers that I usually pull from waters 400-900 feet deep, there are no reefs that deep, no sun, but even those I've curtailed. I'm mostly sticking to salmon and dolphin. DON'T EAT 'CUDAS, PLEASE!

BTW there are 400 known species that carry ciguatera toxin. Sorry I just had to tell you this.:(

I was neglecting my hypocondria but that changes NOW!
Seriously, thanks for the heads up. I've always been open to trying anything twice, except pickled herring. Once was enough on that. Back to painting.

Since this thread has become totally random, it seems like a good place for my random question: In a society that is violently anti-gay, why are openly gay musicians (eg Elton John, Freddie Mercury) accepted with hardly a raised eyebrow?

The fish doesn't care if the chef is gay once the butter and lemon-pepper hit the pan.

I have no idea what that means but I LOL when I read it. Would you be able to explain that or give me a source? I plan on using that line and would like to have something to say when people ask what that's suppose to mean. Sounds like something Dr. Phil would say. Thanks.
