Hey guys I moved awhile back and I sold off ALL my H/T gear to make the move easier. Now I just got a 50" plasma and I run everything off of a HTPC and a STB for cable.

I am looking at building a 2 channel (with maybe a center) system. Could you advise me what to look at in the $1000 range for a pair of bookshelves or floorstanders. I watch a LOT of movies and I listen to techno, rock, and some classical. So they will have to have very good low freq, as I am not planning on a subwoofer because I live in an apartment and I don't want to be "that guy". I was at a local brick and mortar the other day and I really liked the sound of the Tannoy Autograph Mini. But it was lacking a little in the punch department. Any suggestions? Room size is 15x15 with part of the room spilling out into the dining room. Oh and I will probably pick up a Yamaha H/T receiver to drive them.

I have some Rti8 which have great dynamics... If you're willing to pay CAN/USA shipping :( lol

Maybe some Ascend Sierra-1 bookshelves? Only thing I don't like about them is their center channel is massively ugly.

I don't think the Ascend Sierra-1 can compete with the RTi's for the OP's request for "very good low freq". :eek: ???

Depends what one considers very good low freq. I considers good low freq enough for music. Hey Mazer didn't you say that the Polk LSi9 could go down pretty low?

Ohh what about some JBL L890 towers. They go down to 27Hz (specs by JBL) and have 2 huge 8in woofers.

You can get them at buy.com for around $800/pair. Audioholics reviewed the L880 and got a very good review and I have heard them at Fry's and they sounded great.

Yes I did. And the RTi12's go even lower. Overall Frequency Response 18Hz-27kHz. And are easier to drive then the LSi's.

Jesus, RTi12 can go down to 18Hz? That is pretty crazy for a tower without a powered sub. Don't the Def Tech Supertowers go down to around 20Hz?

For the music you described and HT the JBL's and Polk will work great.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll have to go see if I can find a shop here that has those so I can give them a listen.

Try and audition a pair of PSB Image T65s if you get the chance. Very smooth revealing speaker with a good low fast tight bass, life like mids and detailed but smooth silky treble. I own the smaller T45s and find them excellent for classical but they do require a sub for organ works such as Bach's Tocatta or the opening of Richard Strauss's "Also Spracht Zarathustra"
and as wel as for movies. Here's a link;

I like the cabinet design, I'll have to see if I can find a dealer that stocks them. But I'm afarid they won't quite have the punch I am looking for, having a frequency range that drops off around 30Hz at best. But maybe I will be pleasently surprised. Anyhow thanks for the recommendation.

Yes, you will be pleasantly surprised by PSB's T65. The bass drops at around 30Hz, but is tight and fast. It's overall performance, better than Polk's Rti. Your overall listening experience will be better than with other speakers that can go lower.

Anyone have a comparison between:

Axiom M60 v2 vs Polk Rti 10's

I'm looking into new front speakers. I'm ready for some higher end stuff.:cool:
