Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, so I would like to say hello to everyone and Happy Holidays!

I just bought a new Viewsonic N4285P and there is an optical OUT on the back. I have my PS3 and HDTV reciever each plugged into the the two HDMI inputs of the TV.

What I am wondering is, if I connect the TV optical OUT to my recievers optical IN will the Dolby 5.1 signal be sent from the PS3/HDTV through the HDMI through my TV to the Reciever? If it will work this way it will save me some cableing and I do not have HDMI on my Receiver.

Cheers,

Bill ..

Let me make sure I understand what you're asking....

You want to know if the audio signal from your PS3 will be passed via HDMI to your tv and then back out from your tv via optical cable link to your receiver?

The point here is to not have to purchase another optical cable... correct?

Yes that is right. I would need only one optical cable instead of two if the 5.1 signal would pass right through the TV to the receiver.

Ok- now that I understand what you're asking, my answer is- I'm not sure :D.

I really don't know if that would work, maybe somebody can give a definitive answer, but why not go ahead and try hooking it up that way and seeing what happens. Make sure that you set up the tv so that it outputs sound to an external source and does not play through the internal speakers.

My gut feeling says I don't think it will work, but I really can't say.

If you do end up needing another optical cable, be sure to buy it from monoprice of blue jeans- don't waste money at BB or CC!

In all the cases I've seen so far, the only 5.1 that's passed out the TV's optical output is that from it's internal ATSC tuner.

Don't count it on "passing" any other signals. You might get PCM (2 channel) if you're really lucky.

but, I could be wrong.

Thanks

Thanks guys for your help. I'm going to run all the audio through my 5.1 receiver and not be such a cheepy and get the additional Optical cable.

Cheers...
