It's as significant as the invention of the wheel.
They also created the laser, the solar cell, communications satellites, and the first transistorized computer.

Back in the eighties and nineties,
I worked in that very building, and the Bell Labs in Holmdel, NJ.

The labs boast over 26,000 patents and eleven Nobel Prize winners.

Both very impressive places.
