Any thoughts out there on what the best and/or best value universal remotes are? I am looking at Logitech Harmony, Phillips Pronto and Home
Theater Master.

My equipment is:

Rotel - Power Conditioneer, amp, & CD
Samsung - LCD TV Y Blu-Ray
Outlaw 990 pre/pro
B&W 804s speakers
Sub... work in progress, TBD)
Panasonic (older) 5 disc CD changer... for parties

Thanks!

I believe it would be the Harmony or the Home
Theater Master. I use the bottom of the line Harmony (659) and it works very well.

I'm a big fan of the Harmony as well. I use the 670 and have had very few problems. The only advantage to something like the 880 is the fact that it is rechargeable and doesn't rely on standard batteries. The price difference between the models these days is not that big:

659- $95
670- $120
880- $145

If your looking at High end products.... don't even think about the harmony..
What is your price range...?

Installers hate it... Not flexible enough.

If you want an amazing remote that has a touch screen and endless flexibility, I would take a long hard look at the Pronto 9600... or even one of the smaller ones. They are incredible, and have an amazing and endless amount expansion depending on how far you want to take it...

They can be a bit daunting at first with a semi-steep learning curve, but the Product is spectacular... I love mine...

I just got a new DVR so I had to add a control panel page for my Sat Reciever and it took me about 1/2 hour to make a new page, add buttons, labels for those buttons, and ir codes as well.. Up and running right away... :)

Remotecentral.com is the place for questions about any remote..

Not sure how much more a remote needs to "flex''; the harmony can be set to do about anything you can think of and cost a hundred bucks...

No... My idea of flexible, will be when I have a video camera at my front door, and I push a button on my Pronto, and It comes up on the screen, and then when I know my latest hottie wants to go in the hot tub in the cold winter nights, I can program it to turn that damn thing on... Hows that for flexible..?:eek::D:D

Check out what these guys did to full customize their remotes... graphics, controls... really sweet... :) It will allow full automation screen raising, blinds closure, lights... seriously endless...

Harmony is the perfect remote for your Mom and Dad or for those with a simple system and not too many commands to issue. For people who want to truly customize, etc, they haven't really upped the ante just yet. For tweakers I'd recommend Pronto or Universal Remote Inc products with an RF interface and IR emitters.

Thank you Clint... Pronto is really doing some great things with some of the latest firmware... for a fraction of the price of the Crestron or AMX stuff that only custom installers get the software for...

I just got the Harmony 880. The set up was easy with no issues at all. To use the remote is very simple too. Is it the best remote? may be or may be not. But it does what I need it to do and I like it.

From the list of equipments that you have, I think you will like Harmony too.

I have the Harmony 550 and in a handful of minutes connected to my laptop I was able to swap out functions for the new Blu-Ray player and TV I purchased recently. For awhile there I had it set up to control my components not just in the living room, but the bedroom as well. It could control my living room home theater system(minus the bluetooth PS3) and then I could take it to the bedroom where it could control my TV, HTiB, DVD-recorder and cable box and it worked perfectly. My 9 year old girl can use it with ease and if it gets out of sequence, she is perfectly capable of using the remotes help function to get everything back where it's supposed to be. Of course, she can also control everything from the individual remotes and does it better than my girlfriend or any visitors that I've had over so that might not be saying much(I'm so proud of her), but it's just so simple to use.
For example:
You want to watch TV...it turns the TV, cable box and for me it turns the receiver on as well. Volume buttons always control the receiver unless I specifically tell it to control the TV. Same with channel and DVR functions(always mapped to the cable box).
You want to watch a DVD...it turns off the cable box, switches inputs on the TV and receiver and again all the pertinent buttons are mapped to the intended device.
I even have a remote controlled fan in the living room and was able to use the learning function to have the Harmony control the fan as well.
I know some people want or need more, but how much more do you need. This remote will control up to 12 devices I believe. Obviously if you have more than you need another remote, but I paid less than a c-note for the Harmony 550 and I've yet to run up against the limits of it's functionality.

Final Decision

I chose to buy the Harmony 880 mostly because I got it on sale at a local retailer for $145, when it retails for $250. Several informative posts on my original thread and I thank all who participated. Yes, as someone posted, it is a good remote for "your Mon and Dad" and this is true.. a jab, but true. It does not provide total flexibility but I am able to control all my devices (except the Rotel line conditioner), including the ceiling fan, as Thunder just stated. By going with the remote that controls all I need, I am able to put the several hundred dollars saved into upgrading my next audio purchase, a sub. After all, isn't it about the music?
