I have a 13 year old Sony high end reciever. I know it has to go.
I have a mitsubishi 73 in DLP TV. TV has HDMI X 2 Installed all NXG speakers, center, sub woofer, front and back ceiling plus two patio speakers.

I am not happy with sound, not getting good surrond sound.
What I want is great sound and I want to add side speakers, access internet on the big screen, play video games.

I know I need to start with the reciever that can handel 7 speaker and have two channels for the patio.

Can anyone help me design this system. I want a good reciever not over $2k.

Thanks

There are several in the Onkyo series that would meet your needs in that price or under it. Check out the 800 series, like the 805, perhaps.

But, you also need to know what speakers you will get as the speaker's impedance and sensitivity is part of selecting an amp that can drive it properly. How far from the TV is the viewing/listening location?
What is the TV capability, its resolution?

I think he stated he installed all NXG speakers in-ceiling speakers?

Thanks for your help

Let me be more specific.
I ran 14/2 speaker wire
Sub woofer is a JBL SUB 10, Amp RMS 150 watts amp peak 300 watts
Ceiling and front speakers are NXG 8" 2 way with a 3-+ tweeter and mid range adjustments and and swivel cone in the center

http://www.avdeals.com/nxgspeakers/nx82c.htm

My TV is a WD 73727 Mitsubishi, has HDMI connections, most of the bells and whistles 73" DLP
Samsung recorder & VCR copies on to another
Panosonic 5 CD player
Infinity center speaker 15 to 125 watts 8 ohm 89db sensitivity

I am looking at the Devon reciever, see below.

Viewers are 10 center to the TV room size is approx 20 x 20
Not sure about side speakers.

That is a good receiver, but it will not help those speakers sound better. That is where you audio issues are.
Since you have Infinity in the center, why not try to match them up front, then perhaps same brand for the surround but out of the ceiling if you can manage that feat.
Don't know about running music from a flash drive directly into the receiver. May need to call Denon on that or someone else here who knows for sure and has done it.

Nothing is wrong with them, the point was just being made that speakers are the most important piece of a HT/music system. High quality in-ceilings are more expensive than comparable enclosed speakers. That being said; it may prove difficult to get the sound you are after with $100/pair speakers. AVRs or amps will not help; a better sub may. In the end it only matters if it sounds good to you but I would not use a 1-2K AVR with the speakers you have. Any 300-400 buck AVR will run your speakers just fine.

This was one of your complaints in your original post?

I am not happy with sound, not getting good surround sound.

So, you need to change speakers. Amps, as suggested will not solve your dislike of these speakers or the surround sound. So, I suggested matching speakers to the center Infinity that you said to have. And, better surrounds than ceiling speakers. They don't work as well as wall mounted and lower on the wall. If you have to have in ceiling surrounds, perhaps another, better brand?

Thanks so much, you guys are great.
No exactly what I wanted to hear, don't like the idea of spending a grand for new speakers but I guess that's the answer.
I just can't to hear the surround sound at all so I thought it might be the old reciever.
Thanks Again

Receiver setup

Marv,
Before you make any major changes, check out the setup on your receiver. Make sure the speaker levels and distances are setup up correctly and that the surround channels are enabled. Try an 80 Hz crossover for the sub. In a 5.1 system, the surround channels are connected and the surround back channels are not hooked. Using the receiver test tones you should be able to hear sound out of each of the surround channels if they are hookup up properly. AH also has several good articles on receiver settings and speaker positioning.

Also, the NXG speakers are not that bad. You might consider keeping the 4 in-ceiling speakers for your surround channels and upgrading the front Left, Center, and Right speakers with higher quality in-wall speakers from Triad, Speakercraft, etc.

JC has a great point; you should be able to hear your surrounds regardless so it may be a set up issue. I have no issue in using in-ceilings and I do in fact have them as my surrounds. If at all possible I to would say change the LCR to a little better and leave the surrounds as is. Also add Sonance to the inceiling suggestion above.

Called Denon

Just got off the phone with Denon.
They told me with the 3808ci there is a USB port in the front that you can insert a flash or zip drive with music on it and it will read it and play.
They also told me the unit is network compatable, has a MAC number that can be accessed through the graffic interface under setup on the unit display.
Add the MAC into the router and the unit can now connect to the internet for accessing internet radio, software updates, etc.
Now they provide a wireless assessory for the 3808 to connect to the router for $230, or you can purchase the upgraded 4303 unit fro $1000 more
Go figure

You have to look for what sounds good to you. Audition, audition, audition...

At times it can be difficult to audition inceilings so if you are sticking with those; you have to go off of reviews. Are you open to trying books or towers for the front 3?
Thanks

Just get a PS3; that way you have a High Def player and you can just stream your music to your system wirelessly.

While you're at it, you should put a little research into more capable subwoofers too.;)

Speaker matching can be very important for good/great sound too. Unmatched speakers from dif. makers may give an unpleasent sound.
