for Korea. Good thing is it's only for a year and I don't leave until next summer. Working out the details but most likely I'll be coming back to Arizona after the overseas tour.

Whew! That's better than a couple places I can think of. And if I haven't said it before, thank you for your service.

what will you and beast do in a non-combat location?

at least it's a lot safer there than the last place you've been.

oh and btw:

Kalbi Jim (beef stew)

Bibimbap (fried rice in a stone bowl)

new dog? does beast stay at your home or at a kennel?
She stays on the fort at our kennel facility. The dogs are assigned to the fort and stay until they retire. Many dogs will have 6-7 handlers in their lifetime.

I had no idea about how that worked. It's like taking away your partner and putting him with someone else...

Think you're gonna have much time to chat while over there?

Matt,

Are you going to 38th Parallel? That is one of the boring, miles from civilization and very cold place on earth. But at least a lot safer than where you was before.
I've been to Camp Hilalea in Pusan, Korea a lot of times when I was in the Navy and its not a bad place to be station there. Back in the 80's Korea was good shopping place for the servicemen but I dont know now since they have better economy.
Thanks for your service.

On the other hand... it's Pearl Harbor Day - We Will Always Remember!!

It lasted just over 90 minutes. Over 2400 Americans were killed and over 1100 were wounded. 18 ships were sunk. 188 American planes were destroyed, 155 of those on the ground.

Right now it looks like I'm going to Camp Walker.

From what I hear the internet over there is, in general, faster than it is here in the states. I'll probably double my post count here.:p

We'll miss ya here on the mainland, Matt. But I don't imagine Fort Huachucha will change much during one assignment. :p I, too, didn't know dogs had multiple handlers. Thinking about it, tho'....it makes sense. :(

Ditto what ML said about kimchi.

Look for good audio buys while you're there.

Glad to hear you will be able to make it online at least. Good luck over there.

Also, I have to come to the defense of kimchi - its the Korean version of our pickle and is great if done well. At least give it a shot just make sure its room temp and not cold.

I'm sure it won't, it's only a year, I can do that in my sleep.;)

I've been lucky in my 6 years as a handler only having to change dogs once because of a move. My first dog retired shortly after I left Kansas and has been living with me for the past 2 years. I've been the only handler that has worked Beast.

I learned some Korean words that you might find helpful.

I'll tell you if I see you on Gabbly.

yeah, I thought the dogs were lifetime partners. i just don't see the point of changing handlers/dogs unless one retires.

are they giving you another dog with a different expertise? (not bomb sniffing?)

re: Kimchi

it's really not bad. it's just spicy leaves :) and there's a fresh version and a bottled version.

90% of Korean food is spicy ... enjoy!

Maybe an aquired taste, but bosintang might make the K-9's revolt. It's barbeque dog.

i've never eaten dog meat but over here, there's a saying that says if you eat a dog, other dogs will be able to smell it through your sweat.

i don't care to disprove the saying's truthfulness. :D

come to think of it, if the saying was just made up, it must be because it's taboo here to eat dogs (for most people)

sorry i didnt see this thread earlier. camp walker is in daegu/taegu. same place, different spelling depending on who you ask. i like that city more than seoul, its nicer, cheaper, cleaner, and less crowded. if you want to go to seoul you just have to hop on the KTX (bullet train) and you're there in 2 hours for about 25 bucks. if you have any specific questions about korea feel free to fire me a PM, i've been here for nearly two years. thanks involuntary extension!
