To all of you guys sneaking gear into your house when the wife is away...

My wife just said to me, "we should get a subwoofer." Let me preface this a little bit. I have been talking to her about getting a subwoofer for about a month now, not too much, but just enough to let her know that I want one. We watch about 3-4 movies a week, and during one of the movies she says, "we should get a subwoofer...you know, for the explosions and stuff." I think I had an orgasm when she said that.

So all you guys who think that its better to hide your gear from the wife. Live and learn! and get her involved in your hobby!

They get tired of you talking about it and just let you go get stuff at some point.

It reminds me of the Saturday morning when my wife stated "I am sick of all this get in the attic and run wires, I am going to the dealers and getting the sub and surrounds, we will finish this today". All I could say was "please get me a decent sub". When she returned with the Servo and Sonance surrounds all I could do was smile.

I still like sneaking new things in...its fun!

yeah, I use the "bug her everyday, all the time" routine too. she usually caves after a few days. "get it already so we don't have to talk about it anymore!"

I got mine involved and she didn't really see the big deal. Until she was with friends and watched a movie without a good sub...:D

My wife is the only reason I'm still eating decent food, rather than spending all our money on equipment. I thank her sometimes for putting the brakes on my voracious technology appetite, but she does know that I need to get out there and buy stuff that makes me happy once in a while.

I've tried to get her involved:

Me: "Does this sound better to you?" (as I'm adjusting something)
Wife: "I can't tell any difference."
Me: "No, listen to the lower frequency notes."
Wife: "The what?"
Me: "Never mind... the bass sound. This new subwoofer is awesome."
Wife: "I'm glad you're happy with it. Consider it your Christmas present, we're out of money."

(We sit in silence for a few moments watching TV)

Me: (merely thinking out loud) "Maybe the crossover setting could be bumped up again." (Reaching for the AVR remote)
Wife: "What is a crossover?"
Me: "What?"
Wife: "That thing you just said."
Me: "It's the thing that rolls off a certain frequency to another part of the system, like the subwoofer."
Wife: "Hmmm..."
Me: "It's also called a Low Pass filter in some cases... (drifting off, thinking to myself). "Hey! I need to do another level calibration check, I forgot to do that after I switched the speakers over."
Wife: (clearly agitated) "Okay, enough of this. I'll be in the bedroom watching TV. Have fun."

Moral of the Story:
It is difficult to properly calibrate speaker levels using a standard SPL meter, with the sound of slamming doors in the background.

THE END (for now)

This past weekend my fiancé did not say anything about my newly bought Toshiba A3 HD DVD and Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-Ray players sitting in my equipment rack when we watched a movie Saturday night. :D:D:D She knew I was wanting them but did not know I had already bought them. However that may change once we get married next spring.

On second thought she did say she wanted about $500 worth of more presents from me for Christmas. That may have been her way of getting revenge.

I'm thinking about bringing in all my new AV stuff this coming weekend. Its been here a week or two already, time to reduce this pile of speakers, AV receiver here in my office.

Been dropping "hints" at Mrs. Nimrod.... the other day I asked her if I could move the fish tank to another room. "The fish tank is now hidden in the corner, (guess where the SVS 12 sub is going:rolleyes:) how about I move it into the kitchen, your enjoy it more....." She immediately go hostile:eek: she knows.....

I have my sub plugged into a switched outlet so it gets turned off on a regular basis. Nobody cares. If it does get left on past 8:00 PM, I'm the only one who notices and turns it off so as not to bother the nieghbors.

To her credit, when we moved here, she did push for me to hook the system up before I was ready. Her point was that she wanted us to use what we already had. She feels no need for upgrades.

I just had an idea, take her to Tweeter with her favorite CD. Let her see what it could be like.:)

Funny Thread... !!!!!

I pretty much already had my HT finished until I decided to build my new subs... But since I have been dating this one girl... I bought a Hot Tub, and built a deck for the damn thing, then bought my 15" drivers for my DIY build, then bought 2 expensive pro-audio amps, and for the DIY build bought a table saw, compound miter saw, jointer, planer, dust collection unit, other various tools, and also have taken her on weekend excursions to chicago, and then to the american club up in Kohler... just after finishing insulating and drywalling the garage. I'll bet she thinks she hit the jackpot here..

After the Subs are done, I will get started in the bedroom with hanging the plasma, and setting up a new system in there with in-walls all the way around.

Im sure it drives her nuts that I do all this SSSHHHTuff and she looks at the whole house that isn't painted or decorated hardly at all... white walls and whatnot.. hehehheh And she can't say a darn thing about it... :D:D

I was checking out some stuff on th B&W site this weekend and showed my wife the 802D. She actually liked the way they looked. ;) At least until I told her how much they cost. I then explained that they have various components available for DIY. She already knows that that is considerably cheaper. I am thinking a DIY set of CM7's may be in order (when I have the funds anyway).

Lucky Dawg!

I have my movie volume less than 85 dBA (during loud scenes of BDs like Day After Tomorrow, Hellboy, Underworld Evolution, etc.). Individually, each speaker is only set to 65 dBC, including the LFE/Sub channel.

When my wife & I watch movies, 50% of the time she asks me to turn down the volume of EVERY speaker by -6dB.

No way will my wife EVER approve. Are you kidding?:)

Hey, I resemble that remark!

My method is a bit different though as I order the stuff when I'm gone so when it shows up she has some time to cool off before I get home.;)

Oooh, that sounds like risky business to me. I'd probably come home to find the locks have been changed, and my new audio gear is sitting on the front porch. I envy some of you guys, I really honestly do... :D
