Cable bandwith question

I was in an electronics retailer the other day and I noticed that they had some MONSTER 1000 cables for like $130. I picked up the package and it said it could handle bandwith of 10.2Gbps. The package really made a big deal about this 10.2Gbps and so did the associate who decided to help me. What I don't understand is why 10.2Gbps is important when blu-ray for example has a maximum data rate of 50Mbps. I don't think the blu-ray player is generating more data than it can pull off the disc. Can anyone tell me why this extreme bandwith is important? Thank you in advance.

HDMI carries audio, video, control signals, and copy protection (HDCP) data all at the same time. The data rate is much higher than just the bitrate required to stream the audio and video.

The bandwidth is important but you do not need to shell out the money for the Monster Cable. There are much cheaper alternatives that perform just as well.

Yes, but there are a number of pairs in that HDMI so not all of the total bit rate is on one wire but many. Some, Monster, like to combine the total bit rate to impress?

So what is the total bandwith required assuming a maxed out blu-ray bit rate and all of the control signals and HDCP protection?. I believe that monster is high quality cable but I think it also has a lot to do with the quality of the cable not just their optimal condition maximum bandwith. Yes, I do realize that bandwith and quality are related but I don't think quality or value is determined just by a number slapped on a package.

I don't have the hard numbers, but monoprice cables sized to the length is sufficient to pass the hi def signals just fine, or the bluejeans cable, for that matter.

Thanks for the response guys I really appreciate it. I thought I was going crazy thinking I was the only one who didn't believe monster cables were absolutely necessary.

No, you are not the only one but we are in the minority, looking at the size of Monster, where it got to through voodoo and preying on human gullibility:D

Plus the fact that most consumers think that a product which is a lot more expensive than another must be a whole lot better. If bose priced their cubes and sub for $200 would most people buy them?

Here is yet further reading material that goes into a bit deeper:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI

Yes, the HDMI 1.3a has a 340Mhz/10.2 Gbit/s but again, there are a number of seemingly balanced cabling for this to pass through, not just one set, and then some.

The article talks about the the 28ga good for around up to 16ft and 24ga to about 50ft, period, end of story. Then there are a few with 22ga wire in them:D

Further down this page is the WARNING under CABLE PRICING:D
