PS3 owners, please answer these questions.

I had asked these questions in another thread, but I figured I would start my own thread.
So I can get the answers quicker (and have more time to make a decision)
My main use for this player (PS3) is as a secondary BD player (for other room).

Anyhow, here is what I posted.

I will be getting the 40GB PS3 (considering it is the cheapest BD player)
So I will compare it myself, to the BD-P1200.

It looks as though I will be getting it Friday (with the 7 movie deal, get 2 instantly).
And I have a couple questions for you PS3 owners.
Does it have to be hooked up to a phone line (or ethernet) for updates?
Or can you download updates, and use a CD-R?
Is the internal 40GB a standard HDD? And can it be changed out for a larger drive? (I have a bunch of spare HDDs)
When they say "sony store" for music downloads, is that the only way to DL music?
I am assuming the PS3 can be hooked directly to a computer, to transfer my MP3 files? (as well, what about VOB files?)
From what I saw, it has a standard female HDMI, does it come with a HDMI cable? A/V (RGB) cables?
And is it a standard HDMI, or a special hookup for the PS3 side?
Does it come with a remote? (I am told it does not, so onto next question)
If no remote, how do you navigate through a BD movie? If through the controller, HOW?
And how many controllers come with the system, and are wireless controllers standard?
Does it have WiFi, or is that a seperate add-on item?

If you could please answer those, I would be grateful (as well, any thoughts or issues you have with the PS3).
I am told there is no remote, and considering I would HAVE to get a remote (30.00), I will have to consider getting the BD-P1400

Thank you.

Until others more knowedgable chime in I will try to answer some of your questions. We have the original 60 GB from a year ago so that not all my answers will be accurate for your unit.

1. We have a cable modem (road runner) and the PS3 has a built-in wireless card that communicates with the Linksys router for updates.

2. It does appear to read an external USB harddrive although we have not attempted to use one in practice.

3. I do not believe downloading is limited to the sony store.
4 Yes, to the best of my knowledge direct transfer is possible.
5. Hard to believe, but it comes with a composite cable. PS2 component cables work as well as standard HDMI
6. No remote. to purchase is only $25
7. One wireless controller . The cost of a second was, I believe 50.00
8. Card included in our unit not sure about the lower priced newer ones.

The other difference is lesser compatibility with PS2 games on the new models.

Hope this helps at least slightly.

1. No, the PS3 does not have to be connected to the internet to update it. You can download the updates via the playstation website onto a flash drive and plug that into the PS3
2. Yes, the HDD can be changed out but the sizes have to be the same and a program has to be used to convert it. You can also use an external hard drive as long as it has an eSATA connection.
3. The sony store is for buying(downloading games) from the network as well as updates and demos and themes...there are no songs there to download. The playtation HOME miht have that though when it finally comes out.
4. You can use a flash drive to upload the music and videos. You can also use a program TVersity that streams your media from the computer to the PS3 via your home network.
5. HDMI cables are not included. The usual RCA cables are.
6. The hook up for the HDMI is normal.
7. It does not come with a remote. The controller can be used for BD. The buttons on the controller act as the remote like X is stop and play. Its really simple.
8. It comes with one wireless controller. If you go to Best Buy, you can buy the 60 gig PS3 for 500 and it come with a second controller for free, or one of two games for free and 5 free BD in the mail.
9. The Wi-Fi is standard.
I hope this helps.

Thanks a bunch fellows, I ended up getting the PS3 over the 1400, because of the more valued freebies.
(granted the free game I have no use for, and will be selling it)

Much thanks goes out to both of you.:);)

The PS3 actually allows you to upgrade the internal drive to any 2.5" sata HDD. All you do is replace the drive and boot up the PS3 and it will go through a prompt to format the drive. The biggest 2.5" sata hdd right now is 250GB. As far as external drives is concerned you can plug in any size usb drive but it can only be used for the extra storage of movies, music, pics, etc. System and game files cannot be copied to the external drive.

Currently the only spare 2.5 HDD I have is a 30GB, hardly worth the trouble.
I was hoping it took standard 3.5 HDDs, of which I have many spares (120GB, 320GB, 80GB, 500Gb, 4Gb, etc.. LOL even a Raptor 150)

But I come across new drives for cheap, when I upgrade a customers system. So I will keep an eye out for a spare 120Gb+.

Thanks for the info.;)

Don't forget that external drives have to be formatted as FAT32. The PS3 will not read NTFS formatted discs.

Oooh, that is great to know. Thanks a bunch Thunder...
LOL, I would have formatted them NTSF first....Doh.

Couple more (stupid) questions. (embarrased that I did not read manual:eek:)

I really don't think I want it on-line.
Found my wireless network, but I did not put in the ssid #, so it can not connect (ATM)
Reason being, I already have porn on the PS3.:p (just a few pics, wanted for the wallpaper)
Also added a few hundred MP3s and a few music videos.

Anyhow, my questions are;
How do I check the status of the used HDD amount?
And how do I check my firmware version #?

I went to settings, and clicked on 'about PS3', it did not say anything there.
Would do the USB flash update, just I'm not sure what version I am on.

I don't know how to check the HDD amount but it will probably tell you when you are close to filling it. If you wnat to check the firmware just go to your SETTINGS- SYSTEM UPDATE(its the first option) if you have the latest version it will tell you. If not it will ask if you want to download it.

Sorry Nick, that won't work, as it has no idea what the newest firmware is (because I don't have it on-line)
But no worries, I found it.

It was in Settings - System Info.
(strange, I looked there last night, but it did not show:confused:)

It is version 1.92 with 30Gb free (out of 37Gb)
