Stupid question...how do you pronounce NAD?

I've always thought it was N-A-D but I've heard two dealers say it as a word...Nad. I would think they know how to pronounce it but it sure sounds odd that way.

Dude, really, over here in the civilized part of the world we all say NAD; if the company is daft enough to choose a name that forms a silly acronym, well, WYGIWYD (and yes, you can say that one as a word too).

Incidentally, I think it is a poor choice from a marketing perspective. Think of all the people that think: 'Huh, he said NAD (Beavis and Butthead).

To me it sounds just like Rotel. When I hear the name I immdiately think Ronco or Popeil, both of which are late night informercial cheap crap.

Names need to be chosen carefully as there are a lot of average joes that aren't aware that a given product is 'high-end' and will dismiss it out of hand based on the name.

I've always referred to them as N-A-D. Boring black components with small volume knobs that sound good. Like the black Anthem models, with less writing.

It is normal to pronounce acronyms as a single word if it is easy to say.
For example do you say North Atlantic Treaty Organization as N-A-T-O, or Nato.
I know it is all part of laziness in language but if it is easier then what ever.

Actually, I think that technically the proper use of "acronym" is when the abbreviation is pronounceable as a word otherwise it’s just referred to as an abbreviation or initialization.

That's what I used to think years ago as well. I was then "corrected". However, I think this depends on who you ask.

Anyways, I have a good friend who is a statistician. Every once in a while he goes to certain conventions or meetings of statisticians, of which sometimes he presides over. My friends and I have been urging him to rename his group as the American Statistical Society.

Believe it or not there's a beer manufacturer here called Aass- unfortunately it's not pronunced "ah-ss" but "aw-ss". Not that that stops me from calling it *** of course.
