There are two HDMI output choices under the Blue Ray settings for my PS3: Bitstream or Linear PCM

After playing around with the two settings and the two audio tracks on the Spiderman 3 Blue ray , this what I get on the display (TV) when I press select on the controller when the disc is playing.

Bitstream

TRU-HD track- DD Multi 48khz, 640kbps

Uncompressed 5.1 track - Linear PCM 5.1 48khz 4.6 mbps AVC fluctuates from 20-30mbps

PCM

TRU-HD track - DOLBY TRUE HD 5.1 - 48khz , fluctuates 2.8 to 3.5 mbps AVC 23-26 mbps

Uncompressed 5.1 track - same as bitstream above (uncompressed )

All four combinations sound good to me but I was wondering what the numbers mean and which do you recommend. Notice that the TRU-HD displays only under the PCM setting and also note that the reciever icon for TRU-HD (DA5300ES) does NOT come up on any of the settings.

The difference is that with PCM you have the PS3 decoding the sound while with Bitstream you have the receiver doing it.

Yes you are right. Any reason why the TRU-HD symbol is not showning up on the reciever display?

The PS 3 cannot output Dolby TrueHD via Bitstream. So if you want to be able to take advantage of the True HD tracks, you need to set the PS 3 to PCM. Otherwise, it's pretty much 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other.

Does your receiver decode TrueHD, DD+, and DTS-HD/MA? If it isn't the reason you are not getting TrueHD on the receiver is because what it does is take the core of the track which is 640kbps Dolby Digital.

Yes the Sony ES5300 does decode all of those listed..thats why I am a little confused, but I believe it is the PS3 with the issue.

Just set the PS3 to output PCM and be done with it.
