I am shopping for a new receiver and 2 bookshelf speakers with a total budget of $600 for it all.

Looking at Yamaha receivers and axiom m3's or aperions...

Any thoughts? Tips? Picks?

AV123 X-LSs are $165/pr without grilles right now. Solid for the price and leaves you plenty of room for receiver or integrated amp. You could also step up to a pair of X-CSs for $260.

Tiffany, those are good brands. I'm a big fan of Aperions risk-free trial period. Good stuff.

I'd say try out the Aperion Intimus 532-LR bookshelves ($360/pair). As you can see above, Ric enjoys them. That'll leave you $240 for a receiver. My quick search didn't show a Yamaha in that range, but I bet that someone here knows where to get one. The Onkyo 505 can be had for that on sale.

You don't need subwoofer or low bass?

If you want relatively decent low bass without a Subwoofer, you might want bookshelf speakers with good low frequency response down to maybe 40Hz if possible?

AV123 x-ls Bookshelf Loudspeaker $165.00/pr + x-sub Subwoofer $199 + Onkyo SR505 receiver $248 = $615

oo, those are nice, iQ1's are good too if you feel like saving some money.

The Usher S-520 is reportedly a very good performer - as long as you are conscientious that it cannot produce high volumes, and low bass without bottoming out. This problem will be alleviated if you use bass management and a subwoofer, but that may be out of your price range.

Sounds great works like a champ.
It's in a stack of black boxes holding down the carpet in my walk in closet!
