Hey people, Im looking into a Onkyo HT-SF800 HTIB. Its reciever has a pass through HDMI. It displays a 1080p picture but Audio is not transmitted through this connection. I have basically made my mind up about the system so Im not looking for any opinions on the Onkyo system. I'm confused about a couple things. First, I looked over my Blue Ray disks and not one of them supports a 7.1 audio format.(The Onkyo is a 7.1 system). Does 7.1 even exist yet? Since the Onkyo system is pass through, will the optical output support a 7.1 ch. I'll probably have more questions to come, thanks for the help.

We're just now beginning to see the first 7.1 sound tracks on Blu-Ray. There were a few 6.1 sound tracks as well. I assume it will grow from here. Personally, I have no plan to go beyond 5.1 but there is no doubt 7.1 is on the way.

"The Condemned" BD is DTS-HD MA 7.1. Audio rating 4 out of 5 stars.
"Doctor Strange" BD is DTS-HD MA 7.1. Audio 3.5 stars.
"Delta Farce" BD is 7.1 PCM. Audio Rating 3 out of 5 stars.
"Ultimate Avengers Collection" BD is 7.1 PCM. Audio 4.5 stars.
"National Lampoon's Van Wilder" BD is 7.1 PCm. Audio 4 stars.

"Pan's Labyrinth" BD will be coming out in December w/ DTS-HD MA 7.1. Audio rating is most likely 10 stars out of 5.:D

Funny how NONE of the 7.1 HD soundtracks have a 5/5 star audio rating.
And I bet "Pan's Labyrinth" would be a 5/5 audio rating even in plain old DTS.

Audio Connections

Dude,
You can't take advantage of the HDMI audio with that HTIB system so whether the BluRay discs include 5.1 or 7.1 HD audio tracks is irrelevant. You can still get the Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 or 6.1 sound track and regular DTS via a digital optical or coax connection and use the Dolby PLIIx DSP mode to play the 5-6 channel sound track on all 7 of your speakers.

For a minute there, I thought you were just calling him "dude", but then realized it's his call-name.:D

Yeah, you can't get 7.1 unless you have HDMI or 7.1 analog input, Dude.:D

Hdmi

Honestly I would like to use a reciever that uses a HDMI connection that transmits audio *** well. Is a HDMI connection have anything on a optic connection or is that not really a factor. I was also thinking about just buying the speaker setup that the Onkyo HTIB comes with and getting a reciever that supports the latest HDMI audio formats. Im sure there are many, do you guys know of any that are under 300 bucks.

No, the closest is the Onkyo 605, which I believe you can get for $386 (includes S/H). But it has 2 HDMI 1.3 inputs and handles 7.1 TrueHD, 7.1 DTS-HD MA, & 7.1 PCM.

Maybe there is more to that sound rating than just the channels:D Perhaps how aggressive the surrounds are? How much is in the surrounds and how much in the LFE:D If it doesn't collapses your lungs, it isn't 5/5;)

Onkyo

I've been looking around and Im set on a system that is fully HDMI ready. I think the Onkyo HT-SP908 is what I have decieded to get. I just wish they sold it without the DVD player. I have a PS3 so the DVD will probably go up on ebay. The system comes with the 605 reciever, which is what I want and the speakers are somewhat more advanced than the ones that come with the HT-SR800 system that I had originally planned to purchase.
