hello guys.I`m new to this forum.I have an old Denom 5600 with a pair of JBL L7,pair of Mirages as surround speakers,a 12inch Mirage SW,and another Mirage center speaker .The soud that come off is still good, considering the time.Because of the new connections due to a plasmaTV,a new DVD all with HDMI inputs and outputs,I have to update the a/v receiver too. Here, we con´t have a lot of variety. The best deal they offer me was either a Pioneer VSX-82TSX or a Denon 4308CI,both having 140 watts,as my old Denon AV 5600 but withthe new gadgets you all kwow. Can you give me a hint on is the better receiver or the most suitable for my stuff. Thanks,Marcipi

I would throw the Onkyo TX-SR805 into the mix as well as the TX-SR875 if you want the better upscaler.:)

Welcome to the forum, marcipi!

Do you have the ability to return the receivers if you don't like them? You could always try both out to see which one you like the best. I would guess that either unit will be quite nice.

In many stores here,if you buy,you have it.They will only accept returns for defective equipment. With the computers going at full speed,a lot of sound store closed their doors or sell only what they think will sell.marcipi

Oh, never mind, I see your location.:)

Do you know the prices of each model?

The VSX-82 is about 1500 dollars and the 4308 is costing 2900 dollars. What increases their prices is the freight weight, plus the insurance.Tha´s why most people buy home theaters in a box and feel like having a big thing in their hands.Marcipi

So how much is the Onkyo TX-SR805? It should cost more than the 4308. It should be about the same price as the VSX-82 and has similar features and a considerably heftier amplifier than either the Denon or Pioneer.

I would also look at the Yamaha RX-V1800 and RX-V3800 if they are available.

Thanks again for your last answer. They gave me their prices which are:pioneer VSX-82 1800,00 dollars,Onkyo 805 2100,00 dollars and the Denon 4308,which is the newest 2900,00 dollars. Those prices are on the cheapest selling store around. If you order from some stores in the US,engaged in exports, the 4308 would arrive by 3600,00 dollars.Marcipi

I personally would get the TX-SR805. I know others will disagree and that's fine.

I prefer Denon, but in your situation I'd also go for the 805.

Just a thought. Have you considered Emotiva? Given your budget, you could get something really nice from them. :)

Onkyo txsr805b

I got my Onkyo txsr805b which retails for $1500 Canadian I got for $1200 so u would be getting ripped off...thats what I think. I would definitely go for the 805 because it has the latest gear, 3 HDMI 1.3a in and 1 out, THX Ultra2 certified, 130 W/ channel, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding, Top line of Burr-Brown DACs for clean sound, 1080P upconversion, Audyssey MultEQ XT, and 8ohms 20-20kHz 0.05%. The Denon with all these features would be twice the price...u be the judge.

The only cons are its really heavy (i like to think because its well made, so not that bad a thing) so no cheap stands and can get hot at times so lots of ventilation and/ or add a fan to keep it cool (I have an open concept audio stand look great.).

Onkyo txsr805b

I got the receiver at $1200 from Top Choice Electronics in Woodbridge, Ontario which is considered a suburb of Toronto.

I don't think Emotiva will be an option for the OP. Even if it was, shipping would be outrageous.

I`m grateful to you all for the info provided.I´ll try to buy the Onkyo 805 which seems the better choice considering the price and the technical side. Thanks once again.Marcipi

Those L7's like a lot of power to make them thump. How does your mirage center match the L7's in tembre ?

Driving the L7's to reference levels with mid level power amps will generate some heat in the AVR. The L7's are rated at 6 ohm.

I'm driving L7's with a Yamaha RX-V659 I have some L100's surrounds and 4311 as a center. Since the RX-V659 has pre-outs been looking at adding external amp for the L7's. Behringer is a value for extra power.

Here are the specifications for the JBL L7's speakers:

Recomended Power: 35 - 450 watts per channel
Impedance: 6 Ohms
Sensitivity: 91 db (1 watt@ 1 meter)
Frequency responce: 30 Hz - 27 kHz (+/- 6db)
Configuration: 4-way
12" / 8" / 5" / 1" titanium dome
Cross Over: 180 Hz / 900 Hz / 4 Khz
Enclosure: Tuned port, floor standing
47" X 9-5/8"X 17-5/8"

I`m looking for a replacement of the mirages, center and surround pretty soon.I don´t think they fit good with the L7 which I intend to keep.About the power needed to drive them,I think that 140 by channel is the least that can be acceptable. That´s why I stilldidn´t go for the Onkyo 805 that´s rated 130.I managed to compare the Pioneer VSX-82(130w) with my old Denon AVR 5600 that has 140 and it makes some difference in the overall sound of the room when you step in the gas.Marcipi
