I noticed this morning that Emotiva is now listing their MPS-2 amp on their front page (under the shipping rate specials for this month). They still don't have it listed on their product pages, but this was the first time I'd seen it on their site. From what I've read, it's going to be the same amp as the MPS-1 but with the front panel cosmetics of the IPS-1 and LPA-1.

I was wondering if anyone here knew any more about this new model or when it is expected to be available? Thanks.

Thanks, eddie!

Do you know if what I read is correct in that it's just a new face on the same electronics? One thing that I'm curious about is if they changed the 12v trigger input to a minijack as opposed to the the bare wire input.

(Yes, I can just contact Emotiva, which I'll probably do next week.)

I think one of the changes Emotiva is making to some of their amps is a switch to turn the LED's on the front off. There's probably more, but that's all I've heard.

That does seem pretty goofy, doesn't it. I wonder what the reasoning for that is.

Let us know what you hear from them!

I have been on the sidelines for a while (priorities - and had to let go of the labor day pricing on the pro combo :( )

But now the MPS-2 sounds interesting and may not feel as bad about loosing out on the deal!

Ahhh, thanks for the reminder. I forgot to contact them, but I'll do that this morning.

I went to their website to check for news on the MPS-2, and I saw that the MPS-1 will be increasing in price to $1899 this Sunday (09/23)! Really makes me wish that I would have gotten one back in July when they were on sale for $1529. Darn it.

Says the man that picked the MPS-1 over the RPA-1! :D:D

Don't get me wrong, the RPA-1 is a great unit. Also, it was the safest decision for me back in July because it was my first separate amp and I didn't feel comfortable dropping $1500 on a component without knowing if it would make a difference. However, now that I've experienced the joy of 200 clean watts per channel, I wish that I had another channel for my center.

Of course, I can always console myself with the fact that the MPS-1 is too deep for my entertainment center. Woohoo! I couldn't use it anyway. Sour grapes...

Okay, here's the word from Emotiva: The MPS-2 is available NOW.

It costs $1699, just like the MPS-1. The costs on the MPS-1 are going up due to increased costs of the cosmetics of that unit. The person didn't mention if the MPS-2 cost will increase as well. I'll check and let you know.

So would you say adding an amp made a noticeable difference?

I'm debating on wether or not to add an amp to my system, and I was thinking of adding a 3 channel amp and possibly another amp or two later on if need be for the rest of the channels.

This also leads me to another question, if I add an amp for my front 3 channels, would my receiver then take the power it would be using for the front 3 channels and redistribute it to the remaining 4 channels still being powered by the receiver?

I have a THX Select 2 certified receiver which does a pretty good job of pushing my system now, but I want to add more power for my mains and center.

You will notice a lot when really pushing your system, down low, not so much. For some reason the ext. amp added a lot of clarity to my center even at lower volumes which I did not expect. Using an ext. frees up the power from your AVR for your other channels. I dont think you can beat the MPS1 (or 2) for the versatility of the individual amp modules, just add them as needed.

Pluse there is just something cool about having a 125lb amp:D

In my system, it definitely did at higher volumes. At my normal everyday listening levels (which are fairly low), I can't tell any difference. However, when I turn up the volume for a concert DVD or a movie, it sounds much cleaner to me with the amp. My receiver just didn't quite have enough power to run everything cleanly when I wanted it louder. That's my receiver and my speakers, though. My speakers are pretty inefficient.

Knowing what I know now, I would have gone with a 3-channel amp. If you weren't aware, you can have the MPS-1 custom configured for three channels. Greg has it that way.

I think so, but I honestly don't know for sure. I'm interested in that answer myself.

Once again I no longer have the latest amp on the market; atleast I did for 3 weeks:rolleyes:

So how does that work? Do they just make it a 3 channel amp and charge you less, or do they bridge some of the channels and give you more power?

My Def Techs are pretty effecient, but I'm sure they could benefit from more power, I tend to listen to my music and movies pretty loud. I'm just looking for the most bang for my buck amp.

Eh, it's the same amp. Just a different (apparently less expensive) face plate. So, you snagged the classic, good-looking version before the price went up. :)

The MPS-1 (and MPS-2, presumably) use removable monoblock amp modules. So, you can buy the chassis and then have it filled with anywhere from one (or perhaps zero) to seven amp modules. If you get it with three, then you'd get the chassis with three modules and have four empty slots that you could fill in later.

Ignoring the price hike for now, I believe that the chassis is about $300 and each amp module is about $200. Greg knows for sure.

That sounds like the way to go, I would probably just get the MPS-2 since it's cheaper, and hopefully will have a minijack 12 volt trigger input.

I'd say contact Emotiva and ask them about that jack. The MPS-1 price doesn't go up until Sunday. You were going to buy an amp today, weren't you? :)

To get it custom configured, you need to call them. There's no way to do it on the website, yet.
