I bought a dedicated CD player not for better sound, but for:

fast startup (let me see your cheap DVD players do that :) )
fast eject from startup
fast play
no reading of "data" from the disc (since it only plays cd's) -> this adds to the startup time btw
easy repeat function (without going to the OSD)

Vintage SonyES single disc/multi-disc players can often be found pretty cheap.

My favorite feature of my 80's CD player was the program function. You could program the order of the tracks to be played, skipping those you didn't like. And what MikeC said.

I don't really see a reason for a CD only player. Today's DVD and universal players are so good at playing CDs, and so cheap, that stand-alone CD players no longer have any clear advantages.
I use a Denon DVD-557 as a CD player, and it sounds great.

While your argument may be quite true I think Greg would like to have a stand alone player for simplicity, I know that is why I like them. They are simple and quick to operate than DVD players as Mike said.

I would venture to say the CD playback quality on the PS3 is good as well, but it isn't as simple and quick to use.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. There is no gain in simplicity. My 557 is as easy to use as any stand alone CD player on the market. Indeed, anyone who uses it to play a CD without seeing the "DVD" sticker would never guess that it isn't a dedicated CD player, since it behaves exactly like one in every respect.
The only difference I can see is that a dedicated CD player with similar audio performance would cost more.

So you would say it operates as quickly as a CD player as well? My general experiance with DVD players is it takes them a little longer to load, start up, all that jazz. I realize this is mear nit-picking, but it is really all about what Greg wants.

In the time it takes me to get from the player to my chair (about 6 ft) after inserting a disc, it has finished loading and is ready to play. The only issue is that the remote is a bit fussy about selecting tracks numbered above 10, but I don't know how much better a CD-only player would be at this.

Just a thought, Greg. I have an Escient Fireball SE80. I think they are down to $700. It is a music server with an 80 gig hard drive. The CD-R tray that is used to rip the cds to the hard drive is a fine cd player as well, although since I have the server I never use the CD play function........

I think AcuDefTechGuy has a Fireball. The CD function is just as easy as a stand alone, and once you use the server, you'll forget about your redbooks as they are all on hard drive.........

I know that wasn't exactly what you wanted, but I would vote for the Rega Planet, or a server......

gable,

after nearly 2 years of searching, shopping, demos, & alot of thought, i recently purchased a dedicated cd player, a cary audio 303/300. in the end i purchased it for several reasons, the best red book cd sound quality i had heard in my system, for the on the fly switching from tube to solid state output, for the balanced output (so for 2 channel my entire system is now running in balanced) and for the upsampling. what i wanted was a new universal player, a one box solution that would do everything well, and after looking & demoing, etc. etc. i never found it. while a 303/300 is well outside your stated budget, my point is that a dedicated cd player can make a significant sonic improvement in your system, & is a worthwhile investment. i owned a 2910 & sold it, demoed the 3910, 5910, own a cary dvd6, demoed multiple times a cary dvd7, demoed the classe cdp-300, & currently have on demo a cary audio dvd8 (for use as a dvd player only). the dvd7 came the closest to being a 1 box solution, with a spectacular picture & great cd sound, but in direct comparison with a 303/300 the 303 was clearly the better player for cd, particularly with a symphony. however the dvd7 would not play dvda/sacd, & with the new hd formats coming out i decided to go with a dedicated cd player with the intent of buying a dvd player and or hd/bd player down the road.

for your purposes i would look for a good used player or at cambridge audio, whose cd players appear to be getting rave reviews.

Has Greg done another disappearing act? ;)

Hey Gable, this is a used set only, and can sometimes be found for a song but is an incredible cdp with a large and sophisticated fan base. These units are treasured for their quality parts and performance. (If the seller knows what he has, it will cost a whole lot of songs, lol.) It's the JVC XL-Z1050. If you can find one...snag it and you'll be good to go forever.

Good hunting

That sir, is a beautiful machine. The looks of it are quite similar to the RX-DP9 I had, even though the disc spinner is obviously a tad older.:)
