1080i TV no HDMI input; upconverting DVD player 1080i out only with HDMI cable????

Dear All,

I have a setup like this:
Samsung Upconverting DVD Player (DVD-HD870/XAC)
53" Hi-Scan™ Rear Projection HDTV Ready TV
KP53HS30

Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR605

The TV is "HDTV Ready with 1080i", so I bought the upconverting DVD player, but it will only output 525p with component cable. To output 1080i, it require HDMI cable, but my TV doesn't have HDMI input!

How do I hook them up?? Or do I have a wrong DVD player? Is there any upconverting DVD player that can output 1080i thru component cable?

Also:
1) Can the TV actually display 1080i? or does it just accept 1080i and down convert it 480i/p?
2) Can component cable really transfer 1080i? If so, can I use HDMI to connect DVD player to receiver, and let receiver convert to component, and out to TV?
3) What would happen if I get a HD-DVD player and supply 1080p video to the receiver and let it convert to component and out to TV? Will I be able to see the picture in 1080i or no picture at all?

Thank you!!

I don't think you can directly connect the DVD player to the display and get 1080i resolution since the TV doesn't have HDMI or DVI inputs. And, since the DVD doesn't output 1080i over component, you can't use that.

Now, since it appears you have an up-converting receiver, you can probably connect the DVD via HDMI to the receiver and configure it to output HD over component. The feature list shows "Conponent Video Upconversion" but it's unclear if you can "down-convert" from HDMI or if the component will output 1080i.

Give it a try as that's the only way that I know of to get 1080i form your DVD player to your TV.

Theoretically, you can pass 1080i over component cables.

But I'll be danged if I can think of any source units that don't mandate HDMI for it, though.

...good luck.

The terms "HD Ready" implies that it takes the signal and converts it into a signal the TV's decoders can handle. As opposed to handling the signal in its native resolution. Which means it is not a true HD TV.

Unfortunately the receiver does not do HDMI to Component down-conversion so this is not an option for you.

Your TV will not handle 1080p signal.

Unless you got the TV for $500 - 1000, I would strongly recommend making a different selection for the TV. RPTV technology is not only last generation, but the specific model you bought does not have even the basic features available today (HDMI, true HD support). 50" 720p native plasma's are now available for as less a $1500 and 50" 1080p native plasma's are available for $2500.

To add to that, I don't know of any receivers that will transcoed HDMI to component.

Oppo DVD players can apparently be modded to do 720 and 1080 through component, but I do not know what it would cost.

It's actually a hack, not a mod, so it doesn't cost anything. I'm not going to give any links out for it (since it's of dubious legality) you'll have to do the search yourself if you're interested.

I can give you two, HD Cable Box's (Motorola DCT-6412 Scientific Atlanta SA8300HD), X-Box 360 (for games: granted it still won't upscale DVD's due to CSS copy-protection, you need to connect VGA or HDMI for that).

You're right about the motorola boax.

I have one and it's outputting 10801 even as we speak. Doh! Wasn't even thinking cable boxes, just DVD players. Good catch.

Don't have the X-Box, though.

I wish more would allow use of component cables, though. It seems to be a more "stable" and universal connection than HDMI.
