Odd behavior on OPPO BDP-103D

My BDP 103D can't read some Blu Ray discs, and stops reading a few CDs for several seconds at a time, then resumes reading. I also have a BDP 103 that correctly reads those Blu Ray discs and never has trouble reading CDs. The problem with the 103D started a few months ago. So, most CDs and Blu Ray discs play fine in the 103D, so the issue seems to be disc specific. I'm thinking that the first step to try fixing this is to get a cleaning disc for the player, but which is the best to get? And are there any issues with the cleaning discs damaging the player?

It is the easiest quick check to try without opening the unit. If it doesn't fix it in one or two runs though, it isn't going to fix it IMHO. Unfortunately, there is no Oppo service in the US.

I suggest you try one cheaply priced Blu-ray disc cleaner which might resolve the problem:

That is my next step. I'm just concerned that there might be some cleaners that are better than others, and I don't want to damage the unit with a poorly designed cleaner. Most CDs and all DVDs run without issues. And the majority of Blu Ray discs play just fine.

When I contacted Oppo in 2018 for problems with my BDP-103D, I got back the following email:

Joe,

Your laser head could just be dirty or otherwise obstructed.

You will remove the screws on the side (two on each side) and back of the player (5 screws). Remove the top cover of the player by lifting up and pulling the cover away from the player.

When you remove the top cover you will see the loader. The loader has four to six small screws (2 or 3 on each side) which need to be removed. Once removed you can now safely remove the top of the loader and gain access to the servo.

Now clean the laser head surface with a cotton swab and alcohol. Also clean the rubber spindle on the servo to make sure there is no hair or lint which can make the discs load off center.

Reverse the steps to put the player back together.

Now play a disc and see if the same errors persist.

Best Regards,

I've done this one more time since then and have had no further issues. I believe average laser life is 7 years???
