Just got off the phone with Lonnie.

You can get the MPS-1 chassis for $303 and then each power block you add is $199. They are a simple slip in module and you can add up to 7 of them. so going this route it would cost 3 more dollars to equal the RPA1 and you have the ability to add channels as needed. (He did say the RPA1 has a little better power supply then the power blocks so it's not exactly the same) I believe this is a no-brainer for me. 3 channel MPS1 here I come.

They are out of the MPS1 chassis right now but said he expects to have them in in 2 weeks.

Are you calling Emotiva or going to chase the little white ball?

Would anyone in his God loving mind ever consider hooking this thing up to an external amp for more power***hee***hee

I mean if had this receiver, I would be thinking to myself, "Why? Oh Why didn't they just make it 200 wpc instead of 170?"

Does anyone have 2 ohms speakers?

If your amp were 300 watts @ 8 ohms, 500 watts @ 4 ohms, & 700 watts @ 2 ohms, would you set your impedance to 2 ohms if you could?

Interesting. I just don't see the rationale. For that much money, wouldn't it make more sense to just get a high-end stand-alone pre/pro like Anthem or Krell?

Great news Greg. I think you will be happy, I know I am with mine. One other thing you will enjoy is that these amps do not get very hot. In fact the only time I have felt mine get warm once and I was working it hard for several hours.

Okay, this really makes absolutely no sense to me!
Why in the world would you connect a 170 wpc $7,000 high-end receiver to a $1,000 150 wpc amp? It wouldn't even make sense if the external amp were 200 wpc, but 150 wpc? It would be overkill to upgrade to 300 wpc, but that at least makes some sense. But going from 170 wpc to 150 wpc makes no sense to me.

Do a little looking and see what audible difference going from 150wpc to 200wpc to 170wpc will do...barely any. The real difference will be load on the receiver itself and the fact that an amp does a better job, in general, of supplying clean power than a receiver, even at that price point. Amps are made for the sole purpose of creating more power while a receiver has to split up its energy to do a variety of tasks.

Greg, let us know how you like the new amp! I take it treatments are being set aside for now?

So why even start with an expensive receiver? Why not just start with a high quality pre/pro plus amp?

Are you thinking that a $1,000 receiver will sound just as good as or better than $7,000 receiver if you hooked the $1,000 receiver to a $1,000 external amp?

Yep; I feel like this is a good choice and I like the flexibility. Lonnie was really nice and almost tried to talk me out of an amp. He asked how my system sounded and I said awesome. He said if it sounds awesome you are wasting your money on more power.

After a little more talk he did say it sounded like I may be running out of steam so I would likely benefit from more power.

Great news Greg. I think you will be happy, I know I am with mine. One other thing you will enjoy is that these amps do not get very hot. In fact the only time I have felt mine get warm once and I was working it hard for several hours.

Another thought on those acoustic panels, you can talk to any of the companies out there... and they can make those custom squares in many many color choices... I believe they are just 2" x 2" or 16" square or build your own...

they just use 1x1 with a beveled edge, you can use a router to bevel... and attach around the outer edges to 1/8" luan (like plywood) and fill with whatever fiberglass you need, and cover with whatever fabric that allows air through...

stretch fabric and staple gun, and done...
