The wife has gave approval on doing something like these panels for treatments (attached)
Hi, Greg,

In our set-up, our sofa is 11-12 feet from the TV-center-mains plane. The room's about 18-feet wide, and opens to a dining room in one direction and a small foyer in another. Until early this year, our sofa was flanked by two good-sized windows, each with a drape. This wall has a west exposure, and we decided to lose one of the windows, the one in the center of the long LR/DR wall. The window was replaced with studs, insulation, siding, and drywall. (I can't notice a difference in losing a large draped window to drywall, even though it's directly across from one main.)

Above our sofa we have a large oriental rug--a kilim, to be exact. It does a good job of absorbing the three front speakers' direct sound. If your wife and you might like something like that, it might be a better-looking alternative to the panels.

I know panels can be expensive, especially good ones. Oriental rugs can be, too. But if you shop around, you can find good deals. A case in point is the one over our sofa. My gf is REALLY picky about oriental rugs. If they don't have a certain build-quality, she turns her nose up at them. We found our big wall-hanging one in Paris for about $300-350--a real steal, considering it's authentic (but not old). We got two other smaller rugs at the same shop that day. All we had to do to bring them home was buy a super-cheap suitcase--more of a reinforced bag than a suitcase, really--and check that piece in as luggage. We'd each brought only one checked bag, so we had plenty of room to spare.

I'm not suggesting you go to Paris for your wall treatment, but you might see if there's a real oriental rug dealer near you. By "real," I mean not a carpet chain. I mean a real Mideast retailer who carries good rugs and will work with you on a price. I bought my gf a pretty rug that we found in a Chicago suburb once. I never would have gotten it for her if she hadn't been there. But she was, she had a b'day coming up, and she loves oriental rugs, so... We got a good rug for a good price.

But I already have a big oriental rug down there and not a cheap one.

By "down there," do you mean on the floor? Would your wife and you like one hanging on a wall behind the couch or on side walls or both, instead of regular acoustic treatments?

BTW, some rugs are meant to be hung on walls, rather than laid on floors, though most can serve either purpose. We got an incredible deal on our wall-hanging kilim. I bet if we'd bought it in the States, it would have cost many times more. Plus it helped that we could speak French to negotiate the Parisian deal.

We're about to replace the carpet in these two rooms with hardwood floors. We'll put an area rug of some kind under the sofa, extending out past the coffee table. Though we're certainly looking forward to the flooring upgrade, I'm wondering how the bare wood will influence our speakers' sound.

Yes the rug is on the floor; we have hardwoods.

We dont have a wall behind the couch so no hanging a rug there. She ok'd the room treatments that I attached so I will probably go with one of them.

Thanks for the info though.

Ok...I am keeping the 40's and going to add an amp and some room treatment.
Help me decide on the amp:

Emotiva RPA1
Emotiva LPA1
0r 3 Behringer A-500's

I was thinking the RPA1 but open for suggestions. I have a budget of 1k for the amp and room treatments.

The wife has gave approval on doing something like these panels for treatments (attached)
I vote for the RPA-1.
If you are going separate amps, you gotta go 200-wpc or above and it has to LOOK GOOD. The Behringer has the juice, but not the great looks.:)

You are not allowed to vote on this because you previously told me that you are against using an external 2 channel amp with an AVR.:)

I will likely go with the MPS-1 chassis and just put 2 or 3 of the amp modules in it unless is cost too much.

Adam is having good luck using the RPA1.

Why do yoy think the front 3 should have the same power supply?

They are almost the same size speakers... why wouldn't you..... your center channel has just as many drivers as your mains...

LRC should ideally be identical..... may as well power them the same...
How much more could 1 extra card be in the chassis here...

BTW, how does that CC sound placed vertically...? Did you call Emotiva yet...?

Since we don’t "hear" any changes secondary to the power source and assuming the "freed" power from the AVR will properly power the center and surrounds does this really come into play?

I have not called Emotiva yet; just finished up a RFP so been pretty busy but free now and having visions of golf.

I don’t know if I can provide a fair comparison. The center was “stuffed” in the confined shelf to begin with and sounded unclear and muffled. It now sounds very clear and awesome but not sure if it’s because it’s in a better place or what. I have never heard it horizontally and in a proper, open place.

Is it voting season yet because I sure feel like voting for something:)
I'm one of those who cannot mix my pees with my mash potatoes. My mind is kind of simple that way. To me, receivers are not separates, and I cannot mix them with separates amps. I actually tried that for one month. I bought the Harman Kardon AVR247 and "mixed" it with my Acurus amps. It sounded just fine. But it just bothered me knowing that. I just can't do:)

Oh yeah, the MPS-1 with 200-Watts x 7 ch looks awesome. I think the Outlaw Audio 300 WPC is cooler, but $3,500 is a little too much. Of course, I would get the Outlaw 12 months 0% interest and pay the minimum until the 12th month. Then I would transfer the remaining balance to my Mastercard and get another 12 months 0% interest:D

Maybe make something temporary to prop that plasma up and slide your cc in underneath and see how it sounds there... couple of blocks and some boards?

Hey your call on the 3 channels, but the more power the better IMO...

I like to crank some movies up pretty good, and I don't think the amp on that AVR could keep up with Emotiva's 200wpc amp... Its just not as efficient, and I would be worried about it faltering...

But hey, lets face it... what the hell do I now... there are more people far more knowledgeble here then me...

Not how to spell of course ;).

I would have to agree with you though, the receiver isn't going to be as efficient as the amplifier, but he could always get 2 power units for now and the treatments then, when his wife is willing to allow more money towards the hobby get a few more power units to stick in the MPS. :)

There may be something wrong with you.

Do me a favor- put your hand out in front of you, bend your elbow, face your palm towards your forehead, slap continuously until I email you and tell you to stop…:)

I dont think you like how I have my center. I kind-of like how it looks and it sounds great. We are going to have a TV stand built so I will just wait for that.

At some point I have to quit throwing money at this thing. Would I like to have an amp with 5 thousand amps and 14 channels...sure...can I get by with a 2 channel amp...who knows...

Maybe make something temporary to prop that plasma up and slide your cc in underneath and see how it sounds there... couple of blocks and some boards?

As far as the whole "2-channel versus 3-channel" debate, I'll say that I wish that I had another 200W amp available for my center - if only to know if it would make a difference. My mains sounds nice and clean now with the Emotiva, but the center still sounds a little strained when I turn it up. It could be the speaker or even the source material, but I sure would like to know if it was the power source.

Yes, yes...I could just hook up the center channel to my RPA-1 and see if it makes a difference. That would save me time and a lot of money, but where the fun in that? :)
