Okay I know, I know, I am one of those weird folks that can appreciate the pipes. Can anybody recommend any good audiophile recordings?

My dad likes bagpipes. He also used power tools without hearing protection for years, so he is half deaf. (I'm not saying there is a connection, but I'm not saying there isn't, either.:D)

Actually I haven't... keep looking for a post from this person. What is the exact username so I can do it that way.

Okay I sent a pm. Once I had the whole user name I looked it up on the directory.

Ah, something new to get captured terrorists to talk. Play loud bagpipe music for them over Klipsch loudspeakers, 24/7. ;) Then when they've given up the information (quickly, no doubt), make 'em listen to rap music (using JBL subwoofers) just for fun.

Could you post what he recommends here in this thread. I’m also interested in some good recordings.

I know you where mostly saying this tongue in cheek... however do you know it has been used (not sure about bagpipes though) Remember Noriega? He was hunkered down in his complex and wouldn't come out. It didn't take to many days of 24/7 loud rock music to get him to come out.

I think bagpipes make a marvelous sound, though they seem somewhat limited in repertoire. I don't have very many bagpipe recordings. A few years ago, I bought "Live at Carnegie Hall" with the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band and it turned out to have spectacularly good sound. With some systems, it may need some treble cut.

http://www.amazon.com/Live-Carnegie-Simon-Fraser-University/dp/B00004UQX7/ref=sr_1_2/104-5936081-3639946?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1186623883&sr=1-2

That seems rather pricey new, so another seller might be preferable.

Years ago, I bought a Fiesta LP called "Popular Pipe Tunes" with the Grantown and District Pipe Band (it may not exist anymore). It turned out to have a very natural balance and still sounds great. Fiesta FLPS 1805. If you ever see one in the used bins, it's a real sleeper.

Ah...nothing like bagpipes. I have several neighbors who play in marching bands and on weekends they wander through the woods, playing the pipes.

I once had the ultimate pipe experience touristing in NYC...I saw several guys in kilts..then more on another block...what's going on...later that day pipes, pipes and more pipes,,,everywhere on every block, guys with kilts and pipes. It turned out to be Scottish independence day and the finale was a parade in Central Park with 10,000 people playing bagpipes (counted by the NY Times) and Sean Connery at the head of the parade. Just wave after wave of pipers playing Scotland the Brave. I didn't think there were 10,000 pipers in the entire world, much less one park.

Interestingly, the best bit of bagpipe playing that I have heard had nothing to do with Scotland. It is on a CD by the middle-eastern percussion ensemble Zarbang. The bagpipe in question is made from an animal bladder, and clearly of truly ancient origins (I can easily envision a caveman making one just like it to accompany his freinds beating on logs.)

I gotta say, I dig bagpipes too. Let us know if you come across any good recordings.

How about the Banjo? I actually like the Banjo too.

I can't comment on the sonics of any particular recording, but I highly recommend the work of Horslips and The Tannahill Weavers. Their mix of rock and folk(pipes) is very much to my liking.

Correction...Earl Scruggs.

Fleck is a no good hippie...a talanted picckin SOB, but a hippie none the less. Stick with the original...caint go wrong with scruggs.
And what, pray tell, is wrong with hippies? Some of the best music ever was written and performed in the late '60s, and nearly all of it by hippies. The greatest guitarist of all time (Hendrix, of course) was a hippie.
(There are also a lot of other excellent reasons for liking hippies that have nothing to do with music.)
