I have the VRX surrounds, but I've only used them with a sub woofer. I find them an excellent match for the VR3s. Truth be told, by the time you get around to doing the whole home theater thing you will be looking for a sub to go with your system. Remember your center isn't going much lower than the VRXs. What get's tricky is placement. The VRXs work best for me because I don't have a lot of room (4ft) behind my seating position and with the surrounds on my left and right the design of the VRX works to fill the space behind me as well as to my left and right.
My advice is to get the VRC and the two VR3s and chill for a bit. Get to know your new toys and enjoy them. Then sit down and figure out speaker placement for your surrounds. That will go a long way to helping you decide what's best for your situation. Besides you're in a wood floor apt with no good way to run cables right now.
Ya know, the only bad thing about our hobby is it's an addiction and it's so easy for us to get hyper excited and blow the college/rent/food money on gear.
