New here and need advice about what to do with speakers

sorry for using my first post to ask for help but i saw a huge pair of speakers for under €100 and so i grabbed them. i had them hooked up to my hi-fi. but it was only 30watt (I think) and since the guy who sold them to me said they were 800watt I thought i'd invest in something to get the most out of them. so i went to my local electronic store and gave the guy there the details below and he said that there wasn't anything in the shop to get the most out of them so i've done what all amatures do and turned to the internet for help. i'm a complete newbie to audio setups so any advice and help you can give me in the getting the most out of this setup would be apprectied

The power rating on the speakers is almost irrelevant. The values given are not how much power the speaker requires, those are simply what it is capable of handling. With it being horn loaded it is likely very sensitive and with a -3dB of 30Hz, I'd imagine these won't be terribly hard to drive. A typical 30w receiver probably isn't enough as you may have found, but any decent stereo receiver should be able to handle these guys without issue. I'd take a look at the 2ch offerings from Denon, Harmon Kardon and Onkyo for starters.

From the specs and product features listed it seems more likely they are some type of PA speaker. I don't know of any recent "scam" speakers that have 15" woofers, maybe some older ones did though.

even if they are PA speakers, they could still be white van.

If you go on the theater research website, you will see that they also sell rip off PA speakers.

sorry for bumping this but what excatly is a stereo receiver. i've googled it and it seams to be stereo and usually expensive. i was talking to a friend and she said that all i need is an amp...... i haven't a clue. sorry i've no idea what i'm doing. :/

A stereo receiver is a receiver that is pretty much designed exclusively for two channel listening. It will process information and send it to two speaker which it is powering. To use your speakers you want need an pre/pro and an amp or you could get a receiver that has enough power output to power them as well and that will do the same thing.

They are PA speakers, designed to go very loud. They should be powered by a professional style amplifier. You could get a preamp on Ebay along with the amp. For preamps you could look at Carver, or possibly something more cost effective like Kenwood or Sony. Then the amp could be a Behringer, Crown, QSC, too many brands to list. You definitely don't want to power them with regular A/V receiver at higher volumes (resistance on these type of speakers tend to get a little to low for your standard home audio equipment.). You also don't need to spend large amounts of money to get a powerful system. You could probably assemble plenty of power for a stereo setup with these without spending much more than $300 if you buy right.
