Subwoofer Eq Suggestions

I have been looking for an equalizer for my sub since after running my Rives disc with my SPL I realized I have some serious peaks that need to be dealt with. I heard the behringer feedback destroyer was a good inexpensive choice. I am hoping to not spend too much money since I will need to save up for it but from what I have seen on my own this is a good choice. Any other suggestions or advice?

I don't have a Behringer, but they get plenty of good reviews and are priced right. You'll need a good mike and handy computer while your at it. You might also want to consider smoothing those peaks with room treatments and/or (best yet for me) a second sub! YMMV because of room issues, but my opposite-corner located subs, with opposing phasing, dropped 20dB peaks to <5dB and generally smoothed out the entire 20-80 FR.

More headroom is the bonus. As Tim The Toolman Taylor would say...."More P O W E R! OH OH OH!"

While I would love to get another sub I don't have a good place to put it where I am currently located and probably shouldn't make that kind of investment right now. I was looking at a mix of room acoustics and the Behringer I have a laptop so the computer thing wouldn't be an issue but the only mic I have is my audyssey auto-set up one so I would need to get an actual mic although another sub sure does sound fun

HA! You know you really want another sub, avaserfi. Let's see....$150 for the Behringer, plus $40 for a good mike, plus shipping, add the Visa fee, carry the one, multiply by .8, subract the power savings, lose ten minutes of your life to WAF issues, and VOILA!....it suddenly makes logical (and emotional) sense to buy a second sub! (Space issues? Get a small sub.) There ya go.

If and thats a big if I got another sub I would probably try to mate it with the sub I currently have since I should be able to get a deal. That question really does depend on how much help I get here with the EQ question. We will see, I will probably play with repositioning my current woofer this weekend some before spending any more money ofcourse.

Thanks for the link. After reading it I am a little discouraged I thought I would just need to buy the unit and I would be good but now I know better. Looks like will be playing around with treatments first than depending on how those work think about alternatives.

one more thing. here's the first step to calibrating your sub with barely no money spent ...

instead of your tones and SPL readings, get Room EQ Wizard.

if you can find the perfect position in your room, it will be the best upgrade you can do without spending a cent. (except for the external sound card and cables), I moved my subs to about 50 locations/combinations to figure out the best location. can you imagine if I used test tones to graph?

Put a couple of corner traps in the room first. You may find that solves your problem right there. There are affordable ones out there or you can diy pretty inexpensively.

Yeah, GIK. The GIK 244 is $65 each for 2' x 4' x 4" panels. I could barely build it myself for that price. I don't know how I missed this or if they lowered the price, but had I noticed this at the time, I don't think I would have built my own panels. Two of these could solve your problem for under $200 shipped to your door.

Or try the super bass traps 2' x 4' x 6" panels for $119 each.
Or the corner traps for $258 for two.

At any rate, for a budget under $300, you're in business and I'm sure you will be stunned at the difference they make.

If you're going to corner mount them, I'd recommend the Tri Traps instead. They'll take up less space, perform just as well, and break even vs. the Monsters since the Tri's come 2 in a box - the monsters are 1 to a box.

If you need more control for the same money, you can get 2 pair of 244's. Use one pair straddling the room corners and potentially another pair on the rear wall behind the listening position (good decay control and this position generally presents a nasty null in most rooms)

I am in the process of getting an external soundcard to run Room EQ Wizard and see how much a behringer will help me out. Also, I am looking into and saving up for treatments. Once I have the money and items I will post results .

Thanks for the mic suggestion. My plan was to use the SPL as a mic at first and when more money came in get a more precise mic and redo everything. I don't mind wasting the time because I like playing with my toys and I figure do it in steps since the RS SPL will work better than nothing then the calibrated mic will be the next step.

But, you need more than a 1/3 octave test tones. There is one CD that has single frequency tones from 10Hz to 99Hz. You may be missing something in-between the 1/3 octaves. And, you can just adjust the RS correction chart for the in between. Your ears are not very sensitive to 1dB changes in the low band.

The Behringer is a bit to get the hang of at first.

I can't say for sure but I believe this is the same one used in Velodyne's SMS-1 EQ system.

What cd is that? I have rives but it isn't quiet that inclusive.
