Some studios do both and some only does one or the other.
You may want to check out the bluray only that you would be missing for a while. Disney is only in Bluray for sure.

I looked over both formats, HD DVD only has one film company that supports it exclusively ...

but then, the matrix on HD DVD has been released already (blu-ray release is tagged as "soon")

Put me down for PS3 BD. It's a lot more than just a disc player, and yet it's cheaper than HD DVD. Overall I prefer BD anyway, they're higher density so more content is possible.

Other than first-gen Toshiba players, where can you find an HD-DVD player selling cheaper than $500?

Last night I discovered that Sony's marketing BLOWS. I was talking to some xbox fans and well now they want PS3s because of features most people don't know about.

Along side getting a top of the line blu-ray player, you get a great upconverting dvd player and SACD player. Since the ps3 has hdmi 1.3 they also enabled trueHD uncompressed decoding. Also, after the new update you can wirelessly connect to your computer and stream audio, video and pictures easily.

With the ps3 you get a video game system, a good semi-universal player and an appletv plus more. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

There are 3 Toshiba players on them market for less than $500 right now, though only one of them is 1080p, the other 2 are 1080i only (basically the same player).

I won't argue the differences between 1080i and 1080p, but I think when most people compare blue-ray vs. HD-DVD, they're specifically referring to 1080p.

Other than first-gen Toshiba HD-XA1 (worts and all), which seem to be finding their way to every discount overstock outlet in America, I haven't seen any other HD DVD 1080p players for under $500.

XBOX-360 elite with the $200 HD DVD add-on is comparable, but costs around $100 more than PS3. And then you're still without WiFi.

The biggest difference is native 1080p. If you don't have a 1080p TV then it probably won't matter one bit to you. But if you do, you may wish you had a 1080p player.

Costco has the D2, 2nd gen for $250
The A2 has similar prices at Amazon but the prices are free floating it seems; it changes all over the place, unlike Costco.

In all seriousness Blu-ray shouldn't even be on the market yet, its just not ready.

The format was rushed to the market because HD DVD was ready and on the market. They've been playing catchup ever since, but their advertising people to the teeth about all the great things Blu-ray can do except that they still can't do it yet(they don't advertise that do they)

The only reason they are on the market now is because if they waited till they were ready it would be too late and HD DVD would have so much lead that Blu-ray would've lost before they got to market. So they rushed half**** product's to the marked and pushed them like only they know how and hoped people didn't read the fine print until it was too late, so they'd have enough time to finish the development.

And guess what soon they'll turn around and say they've got this flash new player that does all sorts of spectacular things(fineprint: not all player can do it!)........but guess what.......HD DVD had that since day 1.......on EVERY F***** PLAYER!!!

And you call Blu-ray the format of choice not much of a choice if you keep bashing them over the head with it, see with the right advertising you can sell anything.

HD DVD is a format, Blu-ray is a mess and 'not ready for sale!'

The Sam's Clubs in OC have the D2 for $247, two bucks cheaper than Costco, if you are a member there. Both have the lifetime return policy.

They are essentially the same player using HDMI v1.3(deep color support*), HQV Reon-VX chip, 1080p output(with an update coming for 1080p/24 output), and 5.1 analogue outputs.
