PC-Ultra: Just looking for some reassurance...

All,

Yeah, I'm going to sound like a little kid..."Am I doing the right thing? Am I? Am I?"

I have an SVS PC-Ultra on preorder. It'll be $1400 after shipping, and I won't get it until July. I waited for months for the new Ultras to be announced, and a couple more months to get on the list for one. However...once I noticed that the new PC-Ultra is the same size as the 16-46 PC-Plus, I started looking more at that model. The Plus would be $400 less, weigh 20 pounds less, get to me much faster, and the frequency response looks darn good on it. I have zero personal experience with SVS products, so I have no idea about the improvement from the Plus line to the Ultra line.

I figure that I'll stick with the Ultra, as I know that I'll always wonder if I should have gotten it if I don't. However, I'd sure appreciate it if those of you who do know the difference between the Pluses and Ultras could chime in with your thoughts.

Thanks!

Adam

The new sub on the new Ultra is way larger and output way more then the old plus 12.3 driver. there are pictures somewhere around here to show the difference.

I too ordered the new Ultra13 and am waiting for its release. some people here have said to just get the plus/2 but that new driver looks awesome.

I would say to just wait and i dont think you will have any regrets. There are others on here that currently have the plus subs that can tell you more about it.

(ahh Warp beat me to it.. thats one of the guys you want to talk to)

By the way Babel, I forgot to mention that your audition at my house, also requires you to bring that new Ultra13 up to my house so we can do a comparison... :)

Ya know, maybe I should pre-order a couple of PC-Ultra13's so I can have totem poles in my room.... :)

The ultra will have the new & better ultra-13 driver, more power, lower extension..etc, etc, but Waiting for new toys is never fun:(

Should you choose immediate gratification, or the better sub?

That's always tough call for me because I'm not a patient person.......... Providing you have the patience..... you wont have any regrets;)

Man, can you imagine what three subs would be like in your room.. I think that is the major problem with SVS.. once you have one.. you want more! I am already planning my second Ultra13.. it has a REALLY low WAF at this point but we will have to see :)

Thanks!

Thanks, all! I just read through the thread on HTS. Since no one has said that I'd be a fool to order the Ultra, I'm going to stick with it. :) I'm not in any rush at the moment, as I'm trying to get my living room repainted, rewired, and recarpeted prior to installing my new baby (baby monster, that is). Of course, once I get that stuff done, I'm going to want it at my doorstep immediately. Patience, patience...

Same situation for me... since the rest of my stuff wont be here until late july also I decided to wait for the Ultra too.. my current amp doesn;t have a hookup for a sub anyway so it would just be sitting here if I had it now.. but I can't wait for it! :)

The Ultra is on my short list of subs to consider when I upgrade my system.

I can't comment on the new Ultra13 (it will be impressive), but I can say my Plus/2 is overkill in my room. My room measures 18x33x9H, which is over 5000 ft/3. It also opens up to a dining room, hallway, and basement - so there are a lot of "leaks." I couldn't budget out for the old Ultra/2, but seeing how what I have is waaaay more than enough, I'm completely satisfied. I had a 20% off coupon from a contest last year that I had to use by 12/31/06, so I ordered the Plus/2. Heck, I still may order an Ultra13. Someone may be getting a great deal on a Plus/2 later this year. ;)

Would I trade for the new single Ultra13? Possibly, seeing how it's a bit smaller. The Plus/2 is a huge sub. I recommend any of these big subs in a custom finish. I have oak. It's an end table in our main room, believe it or not.

You know how time flies. Stick with the Ultra, and you won't have any regrets.

Two subs is the way to go. Adding the STF-3 to my PB12-plus was a huge improvement. I'd love to try PB12-Plus x 2 in my 11 x 14 room.

PB12+ wasn't enough for a 11x14 room? How tall is the ceiling 20ft?? Which sounds better the Pb12+ or Stf-3 or I should say what are the differences??

It's a regular 8' ceiling. The PB12-Plus rocked the room, don't get me wrong. I'm still at the stage where I'm just playing around and trying new things. My room has a massive 40Hz spike and I just wanted to see if dual subs would tame the spike. I still have to run Avia with the SPL meter to see if it has, but no matter what, the dual sub setup is too good not to keep it this way.

I've never tried the STF-3 by itself in the main system, so I can't really compare the two directly although I have been meaning to. The STF-3 is actually sitting in the worst location in the room for the 40Hz spike, so I wanted to be able to switch the two subs' locations before giving it a workout. I'll add my impressions when I get the chance to test them properly, but working seven days a week gets in the way of the hobby.

Back to our originally scheduled thread, the new Ultra is sure to rock if past practice is any indication of future performance.

I appreciate everyone's input.

I just want to take today to express my respect and thanks to all of the men and women who have/will/and are giving of themselves and sometimes their lives so that we may keep our freedoms. They sometimes experience horrors that I thankfully can't (and because of them, don't have to) imagine.

It is in no small part thanks to them that I am able to sit in the comfort of my own home and contemplate what seems to be an important decision...which subwoofer to buy. So, to the past, present, and future protectors of our freedoms, I thank you.

I don't know that I'd need a second sub, unless it was for a second system. BUT--if I HAD to get a pair to use in one system (and I'd be upgrading what I have now, moving that one to an office or bedroom), I'd seriously consider two AV123 MFW-15 subs. They're brand new, just making their premiere. Everything I've read about them is terrific, including the price: $600 for one, $1000 for two.

This is what I'm talking about.... I'm even tempted to give up my 18" single or dual sub project in light of these new subs....
SVS seams to really push the plus 2 everytime I talk to them, but I really think it may be over kill. I don't need that much louder. The 10" DPS from velodyne "can" get louder and way over powring if I crank it up, it just does not extend as low.

It looks like the ultra-pc goes the lowest and I have been thinking that, or a plus/2..

I hear so much great feedback from the plus/2 about how earth shaking it is but the charts on the ultra look just as loud, but stay louder at even lower hz.

Any thoughts.... the more I look into building my own sub, the less of a "deal" it looks to be.

The drivers, blus amps, then probably an EQ to get it all calibrated.. Most extreme linear drivers take 1300+ watts just to drive...
