It wasn't a flame war but just a couple of Ascend fans on that 2nd thread tweaking the AVS mods right after the mods had closed another thread and given a warning. I'll just assume alcohol was involved as it was late on a Friday night.

Early feedback from Ascend owners is pleasant shock!! It appears the Sierra is a better overall speaker, with better imaging and tighter & lower bass response, then its bigger cmt 340 counterpart.

Here is my impression which I posted at the Ascend forum:

"If they were photographs, the 340 would be slightly out of focus compared to the Sierras, as if there were a very fine gauze between me and the speaker.

Given my experience with the 340, this is insane since the 340s are simply excellent.

The bass on the Sierra is better, not because it goes lower, which it does, but it is tighter and punchier. Again, given the strengths of the 340, it was an odd experience.

I think the cabinet is making a significant difference. I noticed a significant improvement, for example, in the sound in my car when I sound deadened the doors. I think the cabinet on the Sierra has much of the same effect. I'm pretty ignorant about the tech side of sound, however."

No worries...I won't have a chance to really check them out until the weekend, assuming that they arrive some time this week. Summer classes just started so I'm pulling double duty for a few weeks until school's out.

I've already seen 340s for sale on some of the other boards.

I am returning the two 170-se, the 340 center channel, and two mounting brackets (30 day period ends today) and have ordered the piano black version of three Sierra-1 speakers for the front and center. Shipping will be delayed a week for the black version. This small company must be absolutely swamped right now. After this I'm leaving new purchases to you young guys for quite awhile.

MS, how would you compare the Usher S520 you auditioned with your current Ascends?
