I just can't seem to get rid of "upgrade-itus". I think I may have the worst case ever.
So I have been eyeballing this RX-DP9V at Pawn broker for months, it never moved and they were set on the price of $399. Well a few days ago they dropped the price $319 and I thought I would look into what this receiver was all about.
By looking at it you know it was top of the line, or in this case second from top of the line, when it was made. Beautiful craftsmanship and heavy, 47 pounds. You would also think that it was only a mere 5.1 receiver at first glance because there are no Dolby EX or DTS-ES logos on the front (it is important to note this receiver does not process DTS-ES Discrete, only Matrix 6.1). The THX-EX logo is what gives it away along with the supplied pre-outs for 7.1 (internal amplification is only for 5 channels).
I did some research on the RX-DP9's sales and found that some internet retailers are still selling this thing for $700+, though that doesn't mean they are moving the merchandise.
At first I thought I would be able to make a quick buck, and still may be able too, but I don't think that is the way the story was written.
Anyone that has read my other recent threads knows I have a Yamaha HTR-5890 (pictured in my signature) as well as a newer addition, Carver AV-705X 5 channel amplifier. Well I think this new JVC powerhouse will be replacing them both, which is funny because it is a couple years older than the HTR-5890. Fact is, the JVC has it where it counts. I has power (stable with 4 ohm loads) and ample features that would make any grown man drool for $320+tax. However, I skipped drool (not really) and just bought the dang thing.
To understand what an incredible find this is, from my point of view, look at my previous pawn shop purchases. They all have one thing in common, they all look obviously used. The JVC, even though it sat in the pawn shop for months has not one scratch on the face plate (some on the side but irrelevant when in my entertainment center).
It has a plethora of DSP modes for those that enjoy those and can be used in conjunction with 5.1 for enhanced concert experience if you so desire more ambiance.
How does the beast sound?, magnificent. I used the Yamaha for music on occasion at higher volumes up to +20 on the volume scale and wouldn't take it much further because I would notice some audible clipping I found to be unpleasant to listen to. I took the JVC up to +5 and my speakers sounded just as glorious as they would at +30 only much louder.
Some little things I noticed during dust removal (routine for used electronics purchases), it has 10 smaller capacitors for the output stage that amount to 33,000 microfarads total, all 80volt.
That is a lot of juice for an amplifier in a receiver, and I am not sure there aren't more that I can't see.
I will have pictures of this receiver soon with a new and updated system thread in the near future.
