...actually took the time to digest and understand my posts in this thread, you would see that exception was taken to my critique of PM and his multi-stringed instrument in the very specific YouTube link...If someone posts the word amazing, amazing is what I expect...it was not, however, what I got. Perhaps I simply have a higher threshold of amazement than others.

It was written that I "obviously know very little" reM...GUILTY as charged! The bleedin' obvious question is what must I know about the Life and times of Pat Metheny in order to have an opinion of this particular performance?

I've been playing guitar, bass and other instruments for over forty years and have even tried my hand as luthier, and therein lies my knowledge base; I feel quite secure in my remarks...

I've apparently tipped a sacred cow, so your reducing my remarks to "...blah, blah, blah..." speaks volumes to your prejudiced mindset...My liking or not liking PM is irrelevant to the OP and has no bearing on to my response to it...This performance and the Swiss Army knife-guitar may impress some, however I don't count myself in that number...As noted, the other limited number of videos viewed have done little to disabuse me of my initial opinion...

STRATMAN: If Pastorius is anything like Stanley Clark, it's a poor analogy for me...Bassists are part of the rhythm section IMHO, welcome to solo now and again, but make little sense as a frontman; if they want to play guitar-like, then let them just play guitar.

I didn't mean in playing style, but in fame amongst a cadre of followers, I being one of them. I understand your point and the semantics of your argument. I too have been playing guitar since 1970, I started at seven. Metheny to me was and is an influence as Pastorius was, though I'm not a bass player I enjoy Jaco's compositions and your opinion of fusion notwithstanding, he was/is an influential force among jazz bass players/students, ditto with Metheny.

Actually, I've never been a big fan of Metheny, so he's no sacred cow to me. I have a couple of his (atypical) albums, and a Joshua Redman album with him as a sideman.

...particular ax to grind, nor am I poo-poo-ing him...The video was represented as amazing and I simply wasn't... for the reasons noted...

There are many "jazz/fusion" guitarists I have little regard for or interest in...John McLaughlin being one...there are modalities and approaches to melody that may work in wind/brass or piano but don't translate well to the guitar IMHO...While I may respect JMs and PMs technical prowess and there might be a few of their tunes I find intriguing in some manner, generally they leave me cold.

So, there is no "commitment", no malice or forethought, just simply a reaction to an event...
