Build Quality of Axiom M50v towers?

I am interested in purchasing Axiom M-80v towers but recently read about their poor build quality.

I am concerned that some reviews are not on the up and up.

Currently I am listening to some vintage NHT 2.1 towers and find them quite adequate.

Would I improve my listening experience with the Axioms?

Axiom reviews

Check out any of the Audioholics reviews of Axiom speakers. They all include removal of all drivers to examine the build quality of the cabinet and components. The one minor complaint I have heard about Axiom build quality is the standard vinyl finish. Obviously, this has no effect on their performance.

If you want a professional grade wood veneer cabinet, check out the Refrence and Rocket speakers from AV123. Even their entry level X-series comes with real wood veneer at a very reasonable cost.

Some people are suspicious that the Axioms are so light, and infer that light = poor build quality. I believe Axiom's response is that the weight of many speakers is for reinforcement to reduce resonance, while Axiom designs the shape of their speakers to reduce resonance, thus no performance-based reasons for "overbuilt" construction.

That's one conversation I've seen played out a few times here and there in my research.

Hi all, I have had my M80v2 for about 6 weeks or so , maybe 8. First off, the vinyl on the standard versions is not too bad at all, its not fantastic but looks quite good and no where near what some people have claimed,i.e., peeling off etc..secondly, if you wish you can upgrade to a higher quality vinyl finish or for alot more money to custom veneers which look outstanding.

Soundwise, I switched from Klipsch RF83 to the M80's and for half the money these Axioms sound so much better(to me) its incredible. They easily have as much bass without the booming but the imaging and soundstage is simply to die for, course my gear helps too! The detail one hears now makes me get goose bumps, the slam of the kick drum and smack of the snare is just awesome.

The finnish of the speakers is fully satisfactory but not gorgeous by any stretch. I bought these for the sound and the finnish is one area they cut corners to keep the price down while able to deliver stunning sound. If you require pretty speakers, I would suggest you get the standard speaks and make sure they are right for you( I'll bet you keep them!) and if you really love them, Axiom will be happy to exchange them for custom made units. (you cannot return custom orders)

As a side note, ensure your amp/AVR can deliver 4 ohm loads at high power settings, alot cannot do this. Also, the 80's require lots of power to do them justice, they love power. A 100wpc AVR will not cut the mustard regardless of what some may say, will it work? perhaps but not to the level that they deserve, just ask the experts at Axiom.
Enjoy!

I own the Axiom M22's, QS8's and VP 150 Center and the fit and finish on all is impecable. I have owned these now about 3 months. While the colors may not be what you may want, the application of materials is spot on. Some reviewers talk about the flimsy grills, but they seem heavy enough to me. I looked at several other manufacturers speaker finishes and the Axiom's is better than most but certainly up to par with the best of the vinyl finished speakers.

When I first got my Axiom m60's, qs8s, and VP100 I was a little underwhelmed with the quality of the veneer. I got the standard black and while nothing is peeling off, the sharp corners of the top of the speaker turned me off a little bit. Now that I have had them for 6 months, I have grown to like the look of the speakers and find that they look fine. I have a very styled upscale house and they blend in pretty nicely, though I still wish I had gotten the upgraded black finish. Actual build quality of the cabinets is fantansic.

As for the sound, well I am still amazed at how detailed the mids are, how tight the bass sounds, and how clear voices are. I've checked out a lot of other speakers since I bought these and I have found plenty that look better, but I haven't found any for the price I would listen to.
