Hi, I bought the Ventriloquist speakers to complement my HT setup of a VTF-3 and Onkyo SR-501 receiver. Well, it just doesn't suit me and it's kind of expensive, so I was wondering what speakers I should buy to replace the Ventrilo that's under 100$, I can ebay if necessary.

You want a set of speakers under $100?
Well, I'm willing to be a big spender and go to less than 200. Understand that I had a logitech z-640 system for 10$ off ebay and I was pleasantly content with that. If you guys have a golden ear, then I have an ear made of ---- :p

I don't get it...you want $100 5.1 speakers but you got a VTF-3 subwoofer? Why? You coulda spent $50-100 on a sub that probably peaks much higher in the upper bass range. I mean if you don't have a golden ear, a $50-100 sub like that would give the impression of much greater bass.

I will be selling some NHT 1.5 Bookshelf speakers pretty soon for about $100. If you would be interested you can PM and I will give you the details.;)

These are the black version, mine are sycamore.

Just curious, what would you think of using the NHT 1.5's as the left/rights replacing those sats in the ventriloquist system. I've got the Ventriloquist and STF-3, but I was thinking of replacing just the L/R for two channel music and running them with the remainder of the ventriloquist for surround.

Good idea, yes? No? It's just a bedroom system.

The center speaker won't be timbre matched with the NHTs, but for music there would be an immediate improvement. A small satelite speaker can't do what full size speakers do. I had the ventriloquist system, it is a good set-up for the money and is small, but not great for music listening. What would you be using to power them?

Here you go. I'm selling my Energy C1's that have been sitting around for almost a year now. 160.00 to your door. These should mate up real nice with the HSU sub.

I've got a Denon AVR-686 in there, with a 26" LCD and HD cable box. Funny thing is that I find myself listening to music in there more than watching TV as intended. As noted, the Hsu under-performs for music. This thread got me thinking about what to do about that, so I pondered on it for about a week before I hijacked it.

I'd like to find a set of bookshelves to integrate into the system, but I don't want to throw a lot of money at it. I have a set of Athena AS-B1.2's that I've tried as L/R speakers, but it's not a great solution. I'd like something better than the Athenas and I'm looking used to keep the price down. I'm guessing that the NHTs are better than the Athenas. Please agree or disagree because I don't know for sure.

Well that is all subjective of course.:D I am not trying to force a sale or make false acusations about the NHTs to get you to buy them, I will be completely honest. The Athenas you mentioned are a very nice speaker for the money, I rather enjoyed the sound of the slightly more solidly built AS-B1. It has a softer sound and is more efficient. It is also easy for most any amplifier to drive. The NHTs are larger, but the enclosure design (sealed) limits extension, and they are bright as well. They don't sound harsh to my ears, but they are bright.

Another thing to consider, one of the speakers has some cosmetic damage, a ding or dent on the front side. The speaker took a tumble off a shelf at a local hi-fi store and has some knicks. The speakers look very nice and perform perfect otherwise. They are a solid constructed speaker, the cabinet passes the knuckle wrap test with flying colors.

If you would like more details, please PM me with your inquiries.:)

I'm not sure what to do. I was hoping for something smaller than the Athenas. I didn't realize the 1.5's were that large. I only have an 8" deep shelf and the Athenas barely fit.
