Warp's first set of panels....

Ok yesterday I got my first set of panels for ATS Acoustics. They came shipped from Fed EX, I had ordered a non standard size to fit in my room, normal size is 2'x4' but I was looking for a 3x5 panel... With the help of my sales guy over the phone, that size was going to be quite expensive (shipping wise),The price of 2 panels or 4 was hardly a difference at all. So we decided to break up each of those panels in 2. I ended up with 4 panels - each being 18" x 5'. Not only did this make a nicer looking layout, it also saved me about $80. in shipping, from the really pain in the A$$ (non-standard) larger size.

When I got the panels, because of the odd size they were all boxed up kinda hap-hazardly (2 seperate boxes joined in the middle with tape) and the tape didn't hold. At any rate, the panels were perfect.

Ok, So I get them inside and unbox and unwrap them, and I was pleased... Construction was top notch, corners square, they used luan for backing and the edges all the way around the front were beveled at a 45 degree angle, very classy looking.
I went with the designer fabric selection, with the circles. PATTERNS or COFFEE I thought the color of the fabric was more of a brown background, which turned out to be more on the black side. From the pics on the web I just thought it looked different. I was a touch concerned... I was really shooting for brown. But when one of my Girlfriends came over for dinner and drinks, she instantly fell in love with the color and pattern. wheeeew.. "Those are awesome, they really make the area pop with the subtle colors and patterns!!" With the lights dimmed, they look even more spectacular. I was really worried about just putting up some ugly panels, I wanted some flare for this room, and I think I got it...

Now I know how the room sounded before, and I didn't want to waste time just setting them on the floor and comparing sound, I just wanted to commit, and get them hung, so I went to it.. measuring and setting everything up was just time consuming. They give you directions which are easy to understand and make short work of the job. Within 2-3 hours of working on them amidst the countless interruptions, they were hung, and I was done tweaking, being a bit anal my eye really adds more work to stuff that is relatively close… hehhehe

After cleaning things up and pouring a celebratory cocktail, I sat down and picked out and ran through some reference / evaluation tunes. I wasn’t sure what happened, as over a couple of months I must have started to get used to the echo and reverb that I experienced, and a few changes here and there were making subtle differences for the better. But I didn’t realize how much of a problem I had behind my corner layout system setup. I was getting so much sound bouncing around behind my plasma that it would break up the front stage sound and start to become quite muddled. I kept playing those few tracks that I was so used to over-analyzing and it came to me pretty quick. This wasn’t just a minor improvement, this was night and day!! My sound stage and dispersion nearly doubled in size, OK maybe an exaggeration, but it was drastically better, without the bouncing sound waves colliding off the back walls and being re-introduced with a delay at your ears, confusing one with the echo. 2 channel audio was much more precise, smoother and much more balanced. Thank GOD !! I moved on to a couple of movies and found that the LCR staging was so much cleaner….

I guess in the end, I really wasn’t as sure that I would notice that much of a difference, but Im extremely happy with the results. Now that I feel like I have just vomited all over your computer screen with my diarrhea of the mouth, Ill shut up... Im looking forward to my next set of panels to make some more drastic changes in sound to this nightmare of a room…

Here are a few updated pictures to see what they look like, and the color changes I have made in my room, and finally hanging my surrounds, although I have to run the wires in the walls.
Slowly its coming together… 

Too bad the flash makes my room so much lighter then it really is... its so much more cozy in person...

I know what you mean , you get accustomed to the way the room sounds , you even get exited when you crank it up , THEN you hear it again when you install the panels and say So that's what people have been talking' about....

Congrats on the panels

BTW , I bet those paradigms look awesome without the grilles

This is an excellent example of how room treatments can actually INCREASE the WAF of your home theater. Everyone interested in room treatments but afraid to broach the subject with their wives/girlfriends should bookmark this thread. People get so used to reading, "I'd love to treat my room but my wife would never go for it," that they start believing it is true. It doesn't have to be. Involve the spouse, spend a little extra on upgraded finishes, and suddenly they are "accent pieces" rather than "room treatments". Good show Warpdrv! Also, don't be afraid to order fabric samples ahead of time. The little extra you spend on that could make all the difference.

Thanks Tom, coming from you, that means alot... although there in no WAF factor to worry about in my situation, I didn't want to just throw plain panels up.. Accent pieces are exactly what I was after... I really wanted to put a bunch of art on the walls, but that is not helping my acoustic situation, so I went after the next best thing... Need to get more acoustic company's to offer more fabric choices, I think that would make the difference for WAF factor.

Also, if worse comes to worse, for those that don't have the time or expertise to build their own panels you can always just order some panels with plain fabric and then go hunting for nicer looking fabric choices and re-cover them.. Very easy to stretch & staple on new fabric.

Next up is the Sonosuede panels from Aurelex.. I thought they were pretty cool look.. but Im a contemporary kind of guy...

Congrats on the panels

Absolutely. When I made mine, I took the wife to the store and let her pick out the fabric. I said, "Anything you want, just make sure it passes the test" (the test being whether it will let air pass through when you blow on it). She ran around that store for over an hour and came back with black speaker cloth  (go figure). In this age of HGTV and more design shows putting more and more random crap on walls to accent rooms, room treatments should be the EASIEST sell in your home theater.

Very nice. I will probably be doing treatments in my room sometime in the near future too. I like the idea of a few of them with the staggered mount, I may do something similar having seen that - thanks :)

Not bad Warp; I am not certain that will pass the WAF for me but I feel like the Sonosuede probably will. So let me get this straight; you have 4 panels and that was enough to make a big difference?

The biggest difference that I found was the 2 panels behind my Plasma where my sound stage is coming from, the sound was just bouncing around back there.. So if you really want to break it down... Those 2 panels made a world of difference,in my sound stage, but I haven't spent enough time in the room since putting them up to get a grasp of it all yet... Echo in that room has already been altered for the better.. Its worth it !!!!

So far with just $300 or so invested.. :)

Looks real good Warp! Room treatments are on the top of my to-do list.

I like the couch and lounge chair too but it won't last around my place with my dogs.:D

Nice setup. I'm glad to see they worked out for you. One of my friends thought my panel were a waste of money until I took them down and replayed a track for him. He noticed how muddied and echoey (sp?) the sound became without them. I'm a firm believer that most people can benefit from room treatment, especially if they can make it work with their decor as you did.

Update....

Ok I just finished installing my acoustic panels from Aurelex.... Sonosuede

I think they look nice, but as its a big wall, it was a pain in the A$$ to get up on the ladder to install and align up there, but I am happy with the installation..
They suggested that you use some styrofoam that the panels shipped with to put behind them to mount about an inch off the wall to improve absorption of lower frequency's... I thought that was cheesy, so I made up some blocks out of wood I had layin around and attached the brackets to the wall. Not all that sure about the lower freqs absorption, but I think they look nicer off the wall creating shadows...They would normally be quite easy to install, I used a couple of laser levels to keep measurements on track. Well after going up and down about 100 times... I got it all done.. Most definately a difference in the echo again.. The room transformation that has taken place acoustically 'n visually is fantastic in my eyes... here are some updated pics of my Great Room/HT. Thanks again to all for the help you have given me, its paid off in leap and bounds. :D

Now I like that Warp. That's what I want to do above my TV but I am uncertain if that is a good location. My issue is there is no wall for the speakers to fire into, so I cant add materials where it probably really needs to be. My mains are pointed towards the kitchen and the only thing there is a granite bar.

The treatments look excellent.............. enjoy!!

It's amazing the difference a room upgrade can make!!

It's really unfortunate that more people aren't aware of how drastic the improvement can be. I find it a bit sad and funny at the same time when I read threads where people are passionately debating over minor variables that contribute very little to the fidelity of sound......... when at the very same time, those very same people (which seems like 90% of the people who populate the forums) completely ignore something as major as the room itself.

Very well done...

Welcome to the club:cool:

Thanks Buckeye...

Its amazing how much echo I have shut down with all the panels I have gotten.

This room pissed me off somethin fierce... So damn bright... I still have a long way to go with decorating here, but at least I could start cutting down on some of the things that have caused me so much agony...

I just today ordered a Velodyne SMS-1 for my pretty sub... :)
I can't wait to play with it, and tweak my sub.... I got a great deal, $450. new, at least I think it was a good deal....

I was really interested in some of the other setups out there, but I really didn't want to wait for the SVS/audyessy.... http://www.svsound.com/CES2007/SVS_AudyessyRelease.pdf

Which was listed at the same price as the sms, but who knows when it will be released... I wanted to start with something for now, and possibly work into playing with REW & a BFD... maybe down the line...

At any rate... again, I truly believe in room treatment, to tame those difficult setups, and I agree that people never want to overcome the WAF but the amazing benefits are worth every penny !!!

Congrats Warp.

Welcome to the world of the believers. Now, when you get that new sub, remind the wife how much difference these panels made so you can install some broadband bass absorbtion. That'll make as much or more difference.

Definately, the hot tub is of utter importance. This is where some clever wording, aka bs, comes in handy. "Honey, who woulda thought these 4'x2' triangular 'packing material' wedges that 'came' with the hot tub, and weren't ordered separately, could be used to absorb bass in the HT? Wow!, they even came covered in fabric that matches the rest of the room, what a coincidence. And to think I actually considered 'buying' something similar."
