Sony STR-DG800 and Toshiba HD-A2 Connections

I am looking into getting an HD-DVD player and am a bit confused on how to hook it up. I currently have a Sony STR-DG800 receiver which sports 7.1 Multichannel in. I read about the Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player and it says it has built in processors for Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD which my understanding is 7.1. If I hook the HD-DVD player up to my reciver via the analog RCA components would that work?

Thanks,
Aaron

Not "component" connection (which is video), but yes, the multichannel analog connection should give you what you are after.

It doesn't have 7.1 analog or 5.1 analog. It does decode True HD and DTS-HD and is output via HDMI using high-resolution LPCM. The player converts the surround format into LPCM so that it can be utilized by a capable receiver. The DG800 only allows pass through, so at this time with that player the benefits of True HD and DTS-HD (Multichannel LPCM) cannot be enjoyed.:(

Aaron, you would need a different receiver to utilize these features. For HD-A2 you could connect it as you would connect a regular DVD player with the SPDIF output used to connect it to your receiver. The HD-A1 has 5.1 analog output as well as the HD-D1, HD-XA1, HD-XA2, and the RCA model available at Wal-Mart. The HD-A1, HD-D1 and the RCA models will be the least expensive, even less than the HD-A2, so you might consider those even though they are larger players.:)

That was helpful for me, Seth, that the HD-XA2 has 5.1 out... :)

I find it frustrating they don't have 7.1 analog outputs, especially when so many receivers have 7.1 inputs that have no use beyond computer audio cards. (which is still rather pointless:rolleyes: )
