Placement of on wall speakers

In my family room, the plasma is will be hung on a wall that is 2.4m between two columms. The columms project out from the wall about 500mm.
I am opting for a 42flat display.
If I were to go for a wall mount flat panel speaker, would the columms get in the way of dispersion?

The other option is to go for satellites and a sub. The satellites would be hung L&R above the plasma near the ceiling, while the centre will be below the display.
Is this bad for sound?

Predominantly movies.

The sound depends on the whole speakers layout, including the surrounds.

500mm of column will create a problem since they will be projecting out and the plasma would be deep inside(i hope its a typo mistake 50 cms???) , but as a thumb rule each front should be atleast 18" away from each side of the plasma for correct soundstage

The plasma is 42"(102cm) which will leave 27"(70cm) on either side of the plasma before the columms. 18" away from the plasma will leave me ith 9" to the columm. Will work?

It should work, you need to try before permanently fixing them :)

Having your L&R near the ceiling and your Center below the display will cause problems with pans. Imagine a car going left to right on your screen, the sound will start up and left, drop way down, then go back up and right. As mentioned the sound will depend on a lot of placement factors and the room, but I don't think it would ever be a good idea to have your L&R that high and your Center that low.
