Thanks for the help with the wire, will get some tomorrow. Sheetrock is set for next Tuesday. You guys have good ideas for a receiver, or should I start a new post for all that?

thanks a ton!

DT

oh yeah, here's the house from the outside.

You will probably get more response if you start a new thread. The AVR is the easy part. like I said, anything that has the connections you want from Yammy, Denon, Pioneer, Onky with ~ 100 watts/ch will be fine. It is still better if you pick out your speakers first so we know what we are dealing with.

Nice house!

O
I think as Greg was saying, I'll get the mains and a good sub first, use my existing surrounds and go from there.

P.S. I love good sound and I'm sure anything you guys suggest will be better I could imagine. So I don't feel bad making a selection without listening to it.
You said earlier that your budget for speakers was $800-1,000. Right in this range, I highly recommend the Era Design 5. I know it's a bit of an "out of the box" kind of suggestion because it's not a really common brand, but I've had mine for a month now and I love them a little more every day. I felt like some kind of beta-tester when I bought them because nobody here seemed to have any comments on them, but I could not be any happier with this choice.

I'm running them with the SVS PB12-Plus, which is a bit of lust-filled overkill on my part, but the sound of these two components together is quite simply awesome. IMHO, of course. Hi, my name is Dave and I love my stereo. Whatever you decide, I hope you can say the same.

I like the Athena option better. You could get an HSU sub in place of the Athena if you wanted.

Just going by the specs, I don't see a HSU sub that can touch that Athena for the price.

Thanks for the post!

I still like that receiver. And I've looked at those speakers as well. Also been looking here:

http://www.svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm
Those speakers only have 5.25" drivers. That's not enough for your room.
Drivers Tweeter (1) 1" (25mm) ClearSilkT diaphragm
Woofer (1) 5.25" (133mm) polypro. cone
Frequency Response (Anechoic) 68Hz - 20kHz ± 3dB
Sensitivity 85dB
Power Handling 20W - 120W

IMO, there is nothing out there that can touch that Athena package for the price. You get towers with dual 6.5" drivers.
Athena LS-500 Tower Speakers
Dual 6.5" Composite Fiberglass woofers
Super lightweight 1" aluminum dome tweeter
Frequency response: 30 Hz - 20 kHz
Sensitivity: 90 dB.
Power handling: 250 WRMS

So after much reading, I really like your idea of the Athena LS theater system, probably with the Athena sub. Also, looks like they make nice outdoor speakers for the patio, and nice in-ceiling for the kitchen. Probably go with a pair of the LS-100s in the bedroom. All tied together with the Yamaha 5990 receiver. Putting all the wires in the wall tomorrow, heading to the big city wednesday, so I'll audition some speakers and make a decision.

Thanks a ton for your help.

I like the Athena option too but go ahead and upgrade to a SVS or HSU sub. Dont skimp in the sub area.

Can you please post the model # within the budget that is an "upgrade"? Everyone gets on this SVS and HSU wagon. And, while I agree that many of them are a great value, I don't see one from either company that compares to the Athena for the money.

I had never heard of SVS or HSU before I became a member here. You?

Well if your big thing is the size of the drivers, I would recommend these speakers.

I'm getting things narrowed down, but my wife isn't real thriled with the idea of tower speakers in her new living room. Are in wall/in-ceiling speakers just not much of an option due to the sound they produce? Could I use in-ceiling for the rears? And I know somewhere I saw some smaller narrow wall mounted speakers that looked pretty good. Would just make a nice clean installation if everything but the sub could go in the walls and save that floor space.

thanks again,

DT

IMHO, and considering the companies that make such speakers, I really do not think that in-wall (or on wall) speakers will sound that bad; NHT, Totem, B&W, Axiom, BG, KEF and many others make in or on wall lines that should deliver quite good sound quality. NHT, and Velodyne even make in-wall subwoofers.

In wall speakers

Toad,
Good performing in-wall speaker tends to cost more than a comparable bookshelf speakers. Axiom has an on-wall speaker design that improves asthetics without compromising performance. Also, their QS type surround speakers can hang on the wall.

Some manufactures including AV123 and Axiom offer real wood veneer which can also add to the asthetics of the room.

I will check on all those that you suggested. I'm thinking of mounting bookshelf speakers up high where the ceiling and wall meet for the bedroom. I could also do the same with the rear living speakers, but I need the mains and center to be at the same elvel as the tv, right?

thanks,

DT

All speakers need to be at ear level in listening position.

Speaker position

Toad,
Check out one of the AH articles on surround sound speaker setup:
http://www.audioholics.com/tweaks/speaker-setup-guidelines/speaker-placement-setup-tips-for-upgraded-home-theater-systems/

Ideally, the surround sound speakers are a couple feet above ear level. These guidelines apply to 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound speaker systems.

For stereo speakers for background music in the bedroom, bookshelf speakers on brackets or inceiling speakers are often used. The tweeters and many in-celing speakers are adjustable so they can be "pointed" towards the main listening positon.

Okay, I'm just about the order the SVS 7.1 system (SBS-01) with the PB12 sub, any reason not to? I've heard it with the PB10, and it sounded fantastic, but my room is a bit bigger, so I thought I'd go with the PB12.

Hard to just let the receiver sit in a box until the new house is done, but so far, I'm doing okay....I do read the manual on occasion for comfort.

thanks for all the input.
