Anyone else underwhelmed by BluRay?

Me too. My roommates old Mitsubishi 1080i rear projection CRT tv looked better than my Samsung 720p DLP tv.
A good quality, calibrated CRT RPTV CAN look good, but I have to agree with Seth, CRT RPs in general are not that great and I am happy that it is now basically a dead format.

CRT RPTVs are too dark. IMO. I own a CRT TV (standart def tube), I think it looks great for DVDs, but large RPTVs, even the nice Mitsus are just not my cup of tea. I like true black levels as much as the next guy, but if I have to use CRT technoligy it has to be a tube.

AND IT IS BLU-RAY, NOT "BLUE-RAY":D

I've only ever seen ONE CRT RP TV that I was impresed with and it was ISF calibrated. Other than that, they all look fuzzy and without enough contrast, which is why I still have a CRT (34" 16:9) today also :)

Heh, heh, Darn right. I am glad I am not totally in true black levels here.:D:cool:

First off, I own a DLP projector and I love it. Yes, digital displays are brilliant and can look fantastic if you aren't picky about absolute black (I'm not).

However, I work with high end CRT based TV's like the Mitsubishi Diamond series every day and they produce some of the nicest pictures with HD content I have ever seen. A properly setup CRT certainly can do HD-DVD or Blu-Ray justice. I do agree that many CRT based TV's are not setup or calibrated correctly.

I believe that my TV is indeed a CRT RP TV, (hey look at me using all those letters :D ). Anyway, that might be why I'm not so impressed with the Blu-Ray discs. But at the time I bought it, it was a steal and DLP was still at least twice as much for the same size TV.

By the way, thanks Jgarcia for the advice about the firmware update. I was using 1.31. I'm running the update now. I'll let you know how it turns out.

It probably is a combination of poorly mastered movies, and the TV. Movies like Fifth Element on Blu-Ray do look awful. I can't describe how disappointed I was when I first Fifth Element on Blu-Ray, I felt ripped off and I hadn't even purchased anything yet, and still feel the same way. The will need to fix that movie because I know it can look good and should look good, I love that movie and they slaughtered it.

Shouldn't take that long. Wireless? I've had it go slow sometimes, and fast others, depends on what is going on on the network. It took 1hr for me to get to 15% one day so I canceled it. The next day the same update took 5 minutes.

At least I mispelled a fake word! :D
It isn't "fake" technically, it is a trademarked term.

I have some more hairs if you want to split them? Here we go.

Why the name Blu-ray?

The name Blu-ray is derived from the underlying technology, which utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data. The name is a combination of "Blue" (blue-violet laser) and "Ray" (optical ray). According to the Blu-ray Disc Association the spelling of "Blu-ray" is not a mistake, the character "e" was intentionally left out so the term could be registered as a trademark.

The correct full name is Blu-ray Disc, not Blu-ray Disk (incorrect spelling)
The correct shortened name is Blu-ray, not Blu-Ray (incorrect capitalization) or Blue-ray (incorrect spelling)
The correct abbreviation is BD, not BR or BRD (wrong abbreviation)

Man, lawyers have no life :)

Something just went haywire with my installation. I downloaded the update to an external hard drive. But when it went to install, it just sat there. I let it sit for 3 hours!!! So I just unplugged the thing and started over and it worked. Not sure what happened.

Many many horror stories at EHX regarding Blu-ray... The Samsung player at the MB Quart booth failed to play BD discs so they applied the manufacturer disc firmware update - whereas it subsequently failed to play any video at all.... They had to use standard def from some other player for their booth...

Several other booths gave out unending caveats, complaining that "the graininess is in the disc, not in our display - really!" Yes, we know.

All of the HD DVD displays looked fantastic of course. I could care less if one or both become the dominant niche format, but BD better get some better mastering pronto and they should resissue most of the discs they put out to date as well.

The issue is with specific discs as Seth mentioned - some use Mpeg2, and those movies only look marginally better than the SD DVD, however movies like Kingdom of Heaven, which uses VC1, look amazing. I think it is more of a rush to get some big titles out, even though they are not up to snuff.... Fifth Element looks almost identical to the Superbit version I have. Color is still improved noticably on the BD versions though.

I cannot compare the two but the Superbit is most impressive:D
At times, I hate it as it shows too much of the prop defects:eek:

I will say, I have yet to see decent BD or HD-DVD demo anywhere, but then again if I judged technology based upon displays & demos in most major electronics stores Id probably still be watching movies on VHS
