The winner
At a height of
1055m (3461ft),
Liathach is a monstrous brute of a hill that pops spectacularly into view as one rounds a corner on the way towards the village of Torridon on the West coast of Scotland. I climbed Liathach last summer and, along with many others, consider it to be Scotland's finest hill.
Photos at various stages of my traverse are shown below. By clicking on the links you'll see where they were taken from.
Taken last weekend.
View from
Stuc a’ Choire Dhuibh Bhig upon attaining the ridge, looking west. The summit, Spidean a’ Choire Leith, pyramidal in profile, can be seen in the distance.
View from the Spidean a’ Choire Leith looking westwards in the direction of travel with the second Munro, Mullach an Rathain in the distance and the Am Fasarinen Pinnacles in between, silently awaiting my arrival.
Upon reaching the
pinnacles…There are two options; you can either tackle the pinnacles head on or, for those of a more nervous disposition, take a path along a lower contour. I took on the pinnacles. Actually, they’re not nearly as bad as they’re hyped to be.
View looking northwest towards
Meall Dearg. Out of the picture to the left are the Northern Pinnacles which are classed as far harder than the Fasarinen Pinnacles. I hope to do these sometime this summer (a winter attempt would require rope work).
View from the second Munro,
Mullach an Rathain looking eastwards. Here you can see the true summit in the distance on the right and Beinn Eighe’s smooth, steep flanks to the north.
So, without further ado, the winner, with the closest answer of 1020m is…
Matt34!
Congratulations Matt.
If you’d be so kind as to PM me the address you’d like me to send the whisky to (Iraq/USA?),
written exactly as I should write it on the parcel, It’ll be my pleasure to sent it out.
It’s funny; as the competition developed I could clearly see who the current winner was at any time. Early on, Clint DeBoer was on target to snatch victory which of course meant that Tom Andry would’ve been the ultimate beneficiary of the whisky even though, ironically, his own guess didn’t meet the minimum height requirement of 914.4m/3000ft to qualify the hill as reaching Munro status.
Bummer, eh Tom?! Oh well, think positively; at least this way you'll be spared any stomach aches.
Thanks to all who entered. Until next time!...
p.s. If anyone is interested in seeing the
videos I took and can accept a 60MB attachment, please P.M. me an email address. I can't guarantee I'll be able to send them, but I.T. at work tell me that it should be fine.
Cheers folks!
