Taco Bell: Dunno if it's a coincidence or what, but.

Actually now that I think about, if you eat too much of that stuff, you will end up in heaven (if you've done enough good deeds).

But honestly, those Hardy's thickburgers are GOOD!

All you have to do is watch Supersize Me :)

Why don't you tools just do the right thing and go to Subway? My fitness world membership gets me a discount so all the more reason to go.
I've gotten just as sick at Subway as at other places. Anywhere there is meat that can be improperly stored or where there is mayo that is also not properly stored, you have the potential for big problems, and when you are counting on $6/hr employees, well that ain't saying a whole lot. There is also the whole cleanliness factor as well... Let me just say, I will never eat a steak & cheese from Subway ever again.

My house certainly isn't Serve-Safe certified and I don't even know what the acronymn HACCP stands for but I do try to follow the basic guidelines to avoid cross contamination.

After I've cut up the raw meat, I wash my hands before I start cooking. I don't use the same knife that was used on the raw meat to cut it after it has been cooked. I don't cut chicken and beef on the same cutting board even if I am making both at the same time. I don't cut vegetables on the cutting board that was just used for meat. If I am grilling a steak I use a styrofoam plate to take the raw meat out to the grill and when it is cooked, I place it on another clean plate.

Simple precautions are worth taking, but as Rob said sometimes it's the producer of the foods that is to blame.
Absolutely 100% agree here, and I do the same.

I was born in a place where you got water from the well outside. The people left food out overnight always. Granted their infant mortality rate was right through the roof but one thing is for sure, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere. New York has nothing on them. Understand that my parents never went to school. So when we got here food practices didn't change. They were clean and tidy but chicken wasn't viewed as a toxin. I personally have learned and use better habits while cooking but food to me just gets eaten. After watching TV shows where they test temperature and what not I'm still not convinced that that food would harm me. Food is my friend. Even Taco Bell.
I got REALLY sick, like near hospitalization, one time from eating some improperly prepared chicken, and I could TELL there was something wrong when I was eating it. I though, I'll be OK....that was a mistake. Not suing the restaurant was too, but they went out of business shortly thereafter anyway, so tells you something... The doctor said once you get sick from food poisoning like that, you become more susceptible to it in the future, and it only takes one time. You don't build up MORE tolerance for it as you get older, you grow LESS tolerant to it.

Crazy thing is that my sister is lactose intolerant. She almost didn't make it. Where I'm from, all babies need milk. Right outa the cow.
Hate to tell you this, but ALL mammals are lactose intolerant. Look it up, I was surprised as well when I found that out. All babies need milk for nourishment and to pass on immunities and such, but unless you keep drinking milk regularly, you will become lactose intolerant also. I am proof of this, because I used to drink 2-3 glasses of 2% a day until I was about 17-18. When I moved out, I drank less and less until I pretty much stopped buying milk unless it was for cereal. Now I can't drink one glass of 2% without getting sick. I still like milk, but I have to drink lowfat or lactose free.

Hey John,

I did look something up in a TIME ALMANAC 2000 that uses Richard Grand, M.D., Tufts University Medical School as a source. Some interesting facts mentioned are that:

1. The majority of non-white Americans are lactose intolerant.
2. All children are born with the enzyme lactase which allows them to digest milk.
3. By the age of 10 many children of non-European descent no longer produce the enzyme.

I remember eating some funky tasting chicken when I was 8 years old. Didn't phase me in the slightest. It was however definitely not what you would call finger lickin' good.:)

We've been spending a lot of time in Texas, and pretty soon wel'll be spending a a LOT more there.

Wassup with these guys?

So far they seem pretty good but, hey, what does a city boy know?
I fell in love with Whataburger when going through TX, it bumped In-N-Out to second place.

Ewwww! 2% milk? Are you nucking futs? 1% is where it's at, except for cottage cheese. I drink milk daily, whether its a glass, or cereal. Haven't broken a bone yet. :)

Ironically I've never been sick from eating sushi, go figure. As long as the restaurant is packed day in and day out, you know the fish is fresh, beware of sushi places with little clientele movement. By the way guys, never eat barracuda, you run the risk of getting ciguatera poisoning, look it up, it's the stuff of horror movies. I wouldn't risk it even with the little ones.

I've never been sick from sushi either, though I usually limit which ones I eat and where I eat it - places I know and trust.

Yup, 2%. Now when I drink it, it is like drinking cream...ugh.

I'd really avoid the combination sushi and bait shops.

And now for the really bad news... grouper, snapper, and other reef fish are also candidates for this disease also.

...and I love (loved?) fresh grouper when I'm in Nassau. Oh well... I wonder how conch is?

If you're going for the sushimi, be a real man and go for the fugu

Just make sure you tip the sushi chef really well BEFORE you eat. It only takes a little slip of the knife to release the neurotoxins.

Caught me a 2 footer in the intracoastal. Mmmm....The guy running the boat said not to do it but it looked okay so I ate it. LOL. I wouldn't do it now but at the time I thought mercury was the problem in the larger ones. It really was good.

Fugu on the other hand you wouldn't catch me cooking much less eating.

Did you guys know that the ground beef that Caca-Bell uses is one grade above the one labeled "unfit for human consumption" by the USDA? In other words, can you say Purina Dog Chow?
Did you know that's completely made up?

And barring that, I still won't touch it with a 20 foot pole.:D

I've been fishing the Bahamas (Bimini) since I was a little boy, I've never heard of conch and ciguatera. But yeah, grouper, snapper (yellowtail being my fav) 'cuda, anything that lives and feeds around the reef. Lately I catch and eat dolphin or deep sea snapper (deep enough where there are no reefs)like yellow eyes or queen snappers usually around 400 feet plus, I pulled up an 18 pounder about two years ago from 975 feet using an electric reel. TASTY!

So far as I understand it(please correct me if I am wrong), the USDA only grades beef PASS or FAIL. The 'quality' grades are entirely different, are 'optional', and are not based on 'fit of consumption', but rather on broad quality judgements.

That being said, Taco Bell is the epitome of mediocrity, so far as the various Mexican restaurants I have tried. To me, it really tastes distant (and bland) compared to real Mexican food, even when considering the lowest quality small-time privately owned Mexican restaurant that I have tried. However, I still pick up the occasional bean burrito or taco, due to the convenience of the location(s) in my area. I am not planning to avoid them based upon what his been posted in this thread so far. Anyone have some credible evidence that eating at Taco Bell is substantially more likely to cause you harm as compared to other fast food establishments?

Chris, I love real Mexican food, the only thing I tolerate from the Bell is their bean burrito(which I haven't had in about 18 months), which I "customize" when I get home with Habanero sauce, it gets rid of the bland "gringo-ized" taste.
