Room Setup Help

Hello all,

I would like to set up a 5.1 system for my family room. I currently have the Sony XBR3 40" LCD. I need some help as to where should I mount the LCD. Here is the layout of the room:

Family Room: Three walls. One of the wall is fill with windows. The second wall has a fireplace. Third wall is the the stairway wall (slanted with a closet next to it).

Should I mount the LCD on top of the fireplace or on the slanted wall? The issue I'm dealing with is will the fireplace mount be too high to watch TV. There is limited space over the fireplace for LCD and speakers. Will mounting the LCD on the slanted wall looked weird and ackward? The good thing about the LCD on the slanted wall is I can run all wiring and equipment into the closet.

What should I do?

Is the closet the dead space under the stairs? Even if its not your only other option is the window wall and if you can get away with it great. To me fireplaces are too high.

Not sure what you mean by a slanted wall. Is one side of it at an angle?

I would not mount that LCD above a fire place. Too high for it and the speakers. It looks like that slanted wall will have to do.

I'm gonna guess that he means the wall supporting the stairs.

What about building a fase wall in front of the slant and then putting your set up in front of that?

Now that would make more sense, yes. As would your idea, except for the work and the looks of it from the other side, the stair side.

You make it sound like I wouldn't put drywall on both sides of the wall. I'm a drywaller so it would be like you programming a remote or configuring speakers. Piece of cake.

So you would come down ur up a stairway that had full walls both sides. If that bothers anyone you just yell up at 'em, "Get OFF the stairs." BTW I have had this a/v set up for 2 years and am still scratching my head about stuff.

Thank you for all the feedbacks. That is correct, it is on the wall that is supporting the stairwall. That is why it is slanted. I do have another question. That is the "ideal" distant from the floor to hang your LCD? I'm trying to blue tape the fireplace and the "slanted" wall to see what would look good.

Measure the eye height from the floor when you are seated in the seat/couch you will be using. That distance should be about 1/3 to 1/2 of the distance on the screen from the bottom viewable portion, not including the trim, of the TV. In another word, your eye height should not be higher or than the center of the screen or lower than 1/3 from the bottom, ideally.
