It's about 45 miles to the nearest theater for me. I will make the trip for the new Avatar movie on a big screen and apparently the theater now has in-seat haptics too, like my couch. I really don't want to be closer to that much "civilization" otoh :)

One of my good friends owns an independent theater and her biggest cost is from the studios. She sells food for just enough to break even as to keep the theater open. She couldn't sell food for more or she would be forced to close it.
Well stated, typos in my comment sorry about that Sir. Every now and then I would go to watch at a movie theater, I miss the big screen. The really huge screen! I'm a big Sci-Fi movie fan. Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Mad Max movies etc.

Blade Runner 2049 was the last one I went watch when it first came out. Yep I'd pay 20 bucks for bucket of popcorn big soda and two boxes of Nestle's Snow caps. Loved going by myself, sit way in the back usually try to find the back seats the ones almost against the back wall sit in the middle.

Sure, You had the usual things, people talking, couples making out. The thing that pissed me off cell phones lighting up! Cellphone's get really bright.

Her theater was built in 1916, a historical landmark, and it has been a challenge to keep it updated. Currently it is only Dolby 7.1, and we have talked about atmos but the requirements from Dolby are extremely expensive. I believe for now she is just will continue to provide the community with a theater that can still give that experience that is still exciting.

Yeah, could totally see that happening. Gunn’s style is unique, so maybe they’ll let him stick to Guardians and shuffle the D/C stuff. While thinking about it, I was browsing pedirayudas.com just to see what kind of grants and support are out there in Spain.

Tulsa King, Star Trek, and SouthPark. Not much else to watch on Paramount+.
Yeah, all of the Taylor Sheridan shows- Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and others.

His new series “Y: Marshals” is coming out March 1st.

If Taylor Sheridan wrote it or directed it, I will watch it unless it’s a documentary.

Without Remorse
Those Who Wish Me Dead
Sicario 1 & 2
Wind River
Hell or High Water
Yellowstone
1883
1923
Mayor of Kingstown
Lioness
Landman
Tulsa King
Y: Marshals
The Dutton Ranch
The Madison

But during NFL season, I can also watch CBS Sports on my phone away from home. :D

Oh, and I am actually getting Paramount+ “for free” as part of my Walmart+ membership ($98/year).

I hope Netflix doesn't get any studio. They will destroy theater and physical media if they do. Paramount or Universal is fine. I would prefer Universal purchase WB. But I get why Paramount wants to enter the race. Paramount wants to compete in the Superhero race against Disney. I would be a-ok with Gunn being shown the door. Bring in someone who is going to make actual quality DC films.
Physical media has already been destroyed. It started with Apple when they discontinued optical discs, and others soon followed.

The theater had already been destroyed long before the news of this merger, with trash movies from Hollywood, overpriced tickets, expensive snack bars, and rude patrons with cellphones.

Also, which company is making optical disc hardware?

The only time I use physical media anymore is when I have to transport recordings on the the fly (I'm including flash drives), or am playing DAT tapes, and both of these will end soon. Merging Audio and Video with two different workstations still calls for it on occasion and I don't have my entire DAT library fully transferred.

Many of the DAT recordings were made with my EX's dad and playing them back through the tape player just brings back special memories.

I don't think the movie theatre experience is as bad as he portrays.
It probably varies a lot depending on the area. One of the last movies we saw the lady next to us had her phone up and lighting up the place for the first half of the movie. Then she handed it to her little kid and got up and left. The kid kept turning on the flashlight.
Another one a lady brought a very young kid that ran back and forth in the row going "ayayayayayyaayayayayyayayay" loudly. My wife asked her to quiet her kid and we ended up with her yelling in our faces to highlight the experience. She thought the movie was loud enough that it didn't matter what the kid did.

And those were just the people that were accidentally obnoxious, there are more and more people that entertain themselves by doing it on purpose.

I so miss going to the theater, there was always something special and magic about the experience that doesn't get recreated at home, no matter how good the system is.

We saw him live a couple of years ago and the people behind us were so obnoxious that it ruined the show.
It is shocking to me that even at live concerts people are obnoxious enough to ruin it. We saw a local choral group doing a Christmas show, bought front row tickets to avoid anyone annoying in front of us. Turns out what they sold as front row wasn't the actual front row and when two people showed up for the wrong show they seated them in front of us. At a freaking Christmas singing show they would stand up, hoot and holler like it was a rock concert.

My solution for that is a trip to customer service. They can either fix the problem or give me passes, since I paid for a movie and got idiots instead. We tend to go off hours or odd days, which cuts that down quite a bit. We went last year though, and now that many theaters also have bars, there were some drunk people in the row in front of us who talked the whole time. That is a different problem. If that is what you wanted to do, then why did you come to the theater??

There are No theaters around where I live.
I find that odd. Do you live next to a bigger town with theaters? I was just visiting a friend in a small town, ~30k people, and they had 6 theater theater and an old style single theater/playhouse on the old downtown strip.

There are few theaters near me. The biggest has 24 theaters. Most have about every variety; 4dxm rpx, screen. Imax, standard, etc. One theater is VIP type theater, extra large spacious reclining seats and all you can eat popcorn and coke.

They even just opened a 2nd Flix Brewhouse really close to me. As the name suggests, they make and sell beer. There's a full menu too. They even have the popular local brew on tap. No driving across town anymore. I don't go to movies often, but when I do I tend to go here. Beer, dinner, and a movie all in one.

It's a 45 minute drive to Eugene where there are a number of theaters, but none closer. Only one has a bar, and it tends to show other than mainstream movies. I have no idea what a 4dxm rpx screen is, but don't think we have one of those....and the Imax is a small one. I usually just watch at home, altho did go to a theater that took reservations for Avatar3 with B-Box seating, which was new there. You'd think as popular as beer is here we could do better! :)

LOL! I meant to reply to Tankini. TBH, I never know what all the different theaters are until I look. Even then I choose the one with the best time. AFAIK, it's different sound systems and/or different screens. Unless the movie is made for IMAX, I avoid it. The one near me is a large screen and the image quality isn't that great otherwise. Though it could very well be a setup issue. The museum also has a large Imax and Omnimax (the planetarium) that show movies on occasion.

I just checked Flix website. Surprised there isn't one in Oregon. It's great as far as theaters go. Big comfy chairs, a table that pulls towards you. A path for the waiters to go through between the rows. Which also has the effect that no one's head can block you. A call button for the waiter. The food isn't bad either.

Back in the 80's during my Intel days I used to go to Beaverton (Portland area). People didn't believe me when I would tell them I was going to places that made their own beer!!!

"4D"X is where they add extra cameras and expand the film to the side walls. It looks cool because it envelops you, but can be distracting during action sequences. We watched Predator Badlands in it, not sure it will catch on.

As someone who still buys movie discs and never passes up a bargain bin of Blu-rays/DVDs without rummaging through, I'm glad Paramount won the bid for Warner. I honestly don't care about the "political" angle of the Ellison family, as one great Warner movie character put it... "I'm tired, boss." At least we'll get movies on disc and in theaters and hopefully see more creative filmmakers ply their craft in original stories rather than endless streams of franchises and remakes repurposed for social engineering. Although, I'm concerned for how much longer movies will remain a culturally relevant entertainment. I'm okay with movies being a niche interest in the future, but I wonder about unintended consequences if movies lose their incredible profit potential. Ditto for music.
