I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the 8805A to replace my aging Onkyo PR-RZ5100. The Onkyo is a 9 year old unit with 11.2 Atmos and 4K when they were relatively brand new technologies. Dolby Vision was patched in. It has some issues with HDMI handshakes and does not support eARC also. The 8805A is a much more mature platform to this end and at this price it is hard to resist. Sure the AV20 would be fantastic to have but I would rather wait for HDMI 2.2 to rollout and the bugs worked out before spending that kind of money.
I will let the forum know the manufacturing date of the 8805A once I get it.
That is a good price and less than to 7706. I hope you have better luck with that unit, then I had with the 7705 and particularly the 7706 which only lasted 3 months. That unit is on clearance and is now discontinued and its details now in the archive category. At the price those will go fast. I doubt there are many left.
I think all this is getting out of hand. I expect the 7706 to be discontinued soon, which will leave the only AV processor options the AV 20, AV 10, the two Anthem units and the 2 Lyngdorf units. So that will leave only really expensive options before you even buy the amps.
So we are now talking a price spread of $12,000 to $26,000 before we even get to the speakers and the peripherals. The problem is that probably is the cost of getting anything that is any good. So that is why we need good two and three channel AV options.
This market is in danger of getting smaller and smaller to extinction.
The outlook of Sound United is uncertain. If the monopolies commission don't approve the Harmon purchase then I expect Sound United will be sold off piece meal.
So, I think you were right to jump now. Going forward it looks like only very costly options will be open for buyers of separates. The only upside it might push the drive to active speakers, which will likely be not only a better option, but a cheaper option than processors amps and speakers.
