We had a diner not far from my house that was a Pullman car- the owner was sent to the hoosgow for murder (mob activity) during a time when the Mayor and Police Chief of MKE said "There is no Mafia in Milwaukee". Meanwhile, Augie Palmisano was blown up in his car and a news article quoted the head of the Milwaukee mob as saying "He insulted me to my face, now they can't find his skin".

Actualy no, creosote ties are still very much in production and use.

Yes, Amtrak is converting its 'Keystone Corridor' (Phila - Hbg) to concrete ties. On a recent trip last month from Seattle to Chgo, we experienced traditional wood, steel and concrete ties in route aboard the Empire Builder.

I'm surprised there is not wider adoption of composite ties from recycled plastic. They don't know what to do with the stuff and making railway ties is better than shipping it to Southeast Asia.
