Hi All

My son has a Sony Bravia 7 mini led tv 2024. It has output connections optical and hdmi. He has a Samsung 990B soundbar with a bluetooth sub and bluetooth rear speakers. His soundbar has 3 hdmi connections including 1 with arc

He streams Netflix , Stan and Amazon Prime. He does not have any physical discs. He has a budget netflix connection which I believe means he does not get 4k and dolby atmos sound.

He has just purchased a new svs sb3000 subwoofer, which will arrive this week. He has been told the svs app does not allow him to adjust the sub delay.

He does not have an av receiver or any other speakers.
He is now trying to connect the svs 3000 sub ito TV in conjunction with his soundbar.

He has explored various options

One idea was to buy a very old budget Av receiver, 10 + years old for less than 100 AUD, that he can connect Hdmi into from tv and use that to connect subwoofer to control delay. And then buy a Hdmi splitter, one Hdmi from Tv then split hdmi to soundbar and split other lead to av receiver. He was told that a hdmi splitter only works to one output at a time and that as soon as second connection is powered up one will stop.

He was also told that an old av receiver will not decode modern broadcasts and he will not get a LFE channel, and ,ay get nothing at all

He was also told that a tv hdmi out will not decode a LFE channel and that he needs hdmi extractor, yet he gets bass from his bluetooth sub through his soundbar.

He was advised best way is to disassemble bluetooth subwoofer from Soundbar, solder some wires onto it for a RCA lead to run to svs subwoofer and then he cannot set the delay on svs subwoofer

A modern budget AV receiver is around 700 in Australia. he has a very small house and does not want to buy a new AV receiver or any freestanding speakers, he is happy with his soundbar, just like some extra bass.

Would an apple TV be of any use in conjunction with a old budget receiver, two Hdmi out one to Soundbar one to sony Tv

Thanks for any advice about this

Regards

Kevin

No, the SVS subwoofer cannot be connected to this system as is. A better solution is simply to replace the soundbar with an AVR and new speakers but that does not seem to be an option here.

The HDMI eARC port on the TV is designed to be connected to the ARC/eARC port of an AVP/AVR or soundbar.

If going with an older receiver to connect to the SVS subwoofer, an optical cable splitter can be connected to the TV and one cable can connect to the older receiver and the other to the soundbar. Signals will be limited to DD and DTS 5.1 but that will not matter much with that soundbar. There will be two volume levels to adjust when going this route.

The TV must be set to bitstream audio from externally connected devices sending multichannel signals and the audio output should be set to Dolby Digital. If using an Apple TV, it should be set to convert audio output to Dolby Digital 5.1 as well. Setting the TV output signal to PCM will result in two channel output with no LFE.

Older receivers supporting 5.1 will have no issue with the LFE signal over optical and the SVS subwoofer can be connected to the Sub Pre Out. Set all speakers to Small with an 80Hz crossover in the older receiver for the SCS Subwoofer to receive a signal.

Nobody in their right mind would suggest such a setup but it should work. I’d still recommend a newer receiver and free standing speakers for better sound and performance.

If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing properly. I think that sub to be used with a sound bar was a total waste of money. Yes, a total waste!
