Hello members,

It has been a hot minute since I last posted anything. I am starting fresh with my home theater at a new pad. Receiver will be either the Yamaha RX-A6 or A8. I have always use Yamaha speakers like the NS-333 for satellites and Soavo-1 for fronts. I am branching out to different brand of speakers this time. Setup will be 7-2-4 Atmos. I was looking at SVS and Emotiva elevation series. Any recommendations are much appreciated. These are strictly for Movies. Thank you guys!

You sing Karaoke? What’s with the Yamaha mixer and microphones? :D

I also have a Yamaha mixer and microphones, so just giving you a hard time. :D

I assume you like the sound of your Yamaha speakers since you’ve had them for a long time. So are you changing for the sake of wanting something “new”?

Why Emotiva and SVS when there are so many other bigger brands available?

IOW, what’s the main reason for changing speakers?

BTW, I donated my Pioneer CLD-97 LD player to the Salvation Army; can’t believe you still have yours. :D

Hello brother, it has been awhile! I currently remodeled my house, I had no space for storage and I literally gave everything away to friends. The Soavos, NS-333s, RX-A3030, MX-1 x 2. Of course something will never be gone is my NSX-10000, CX-10000, MX-10000, YST SW1500 X 2 and the Pioneer. Now I am remodeling my other new pad and wanna try new speakers for movies since I will be using the NSX-10000 for music! I don't know much about any other brands so I am asking for recommendations since Yamaha doesn't make too many for Movies! Thank you man, and I still have my Yamaha Mixer! Hahaha

People could list a bunch of brands but it really helps to know what the speaker budget will be and if the budget is for the front 2 or 3 or for a full surround setup.

Thank you for the help! Speakers budget is $5-10K. I need the LCR to be great, the rest can be good! Mostly for movies, occasionally streaming music! For serious music and I already have Yamaha NSX-10000. I will be using Yamaha Receiver! Thank you!

There are just so many speakers available.

The big Brick and Mortar companies are like RBH, KEF, Revel, B&W, Martin Logan, Legacy Audio, Focal, Dynaudio, Monitor Audio. And then there a hundred other smaller companies that are Internet Direct.

Some can get discounts from the big companies, but you usually pay the asking price from the smaller companies.

One example of $10K 7.2.4 Atmos system:

Fronts x 2: RBH 6500 Towers (1" Silk tweeter, 6.5" Aluminum x 5 woofers)
Center x 1: RBH 661C-SF (1" Silk tweeter, 6.5" Aluminum x 2 woofers)
Surrounds x 4: RBH 61-SF (1" Silk tweeter, 6.5" Aluminum woofer)
In-Ceiling Atmos x 4: RBH VM-615 (1" Aluminum tweeter, 6.5" Aluminum woofer)
Subwoofers x 2: RBH S-1212N (12" Aluminum x 2 woofers) - Passive (needs Sub Amp)
Subwoofer Amp x 1: RBH DA-1202DSP (1000W x 2Ch into 4 ohms) for RBH S-1212N x 2 subs

That's a pretty healthy budget. The RBH setup above would be hard to beat. What's available in your area to demo? Arendal has return shipping in the U.S. to let you try out their speakers. 1723 THX tower system might exceed $10k when you add it all up, but with the 1723 Monitor THX you could build a great system (ShadyJ reviewed them) assuming you will be adding subwoofers. They make a center and surrounds and have very good subwoofers as well but no in-ceiling ATMOS. Paradigm makes some good ceiling speakers.

SVS also has return shipping, so also an option if you like the idea of home trials.

I really like Philharmonic Audio and their HT Tower and HT Center would come in at $5,800. Their BMR Monitor or Ceramic Mini could act as surrounds. Very neutral sounding speakers with a relatively wide dispersion if you like that type of performance.

Of the brands mentioned above, are there any that stand out for you?

Thank you! Yes, I was thinking of SVS Ultra elevation for all surround speakers and use box speakers for LCR due to I can point them to my LP. My room is about 13 x 14 and in an odd shape. My couch will be against the wall or maybe I can spare a foot from the wall. My second option was Paradigm (although expensive) in ceilings/wall for atmos and back wall but I have no clue about which is the correct speakers to get. I probably go with their mid-end products. I will take a look at the RBH, I have been hearing about them for a long time! For Subwoofers, I still have dual Yamaha YST SW1500 for now, potentially upgrade to SVS when neccessary! Thank you so much guys!

I think Gene has used the Paradigm Elite series in one of his systems and has recommended them to others but the cost can add up on those. I have the much more affordable Pro series for ATMOS (P65-R) but they do not have an angled baffle. They fire straight down so they are best used when close to the main seating position. I got mine at half of retail as they were the previous model, so deals can be had. SVS Elevation is good if you need to surface mount. Arendal makes an angled surround as well.

There are placement guides on the Dolby web site for where to properly place surrounds and ATMOS speakers. That may influence the type of speaker that you choose. I have a low ceiling so my surrounds are relatively close and did not need an angled baffle. In a larger room you want the effects channels pointing at you but 13x14 is not particularly large.

The Philharmonic HT speakers that Eppie mentioned are an excellent value. I use a pair of BMR Monitors in my living room for music, and I am incredibly happy with them. Probably the least expensive component in the stereo rig too Philharmonic doesn’t make subs, however, and the HT speakers need them, so plan to add a pair. SVS should work great.
